VSEPR Traits • Electrons on central atom arrange themselves as far apart as possible. • Lone pairs on central atom repel the most • Shared pairs on central atom repel the least • We need to know: - Lewis structure (#of bonded e- pairs & # of lone pair e- pairs) - VSEPR structure - VSEPR name - Bond angle • No VSEPR models for Ionic compounds

  4. One more things that may help • Generic formula to remember shapes • A = central atom • X = bonded pair e- • E = lone pair e- • Example – AX2E -two bonded pair e- -one lone pair e-

  5. Linear • AX2 • 2 bonded pairs; 0 lone pairs • Bond angle = 1800

  6. Trigonal Planar • AX3 • 3 bonded pairs; 0 lone pairs • Bond angle = 1200

  7. Bent • AX2E • 2 bonded pairs; 1 lone pair • Bond angle = <1200

  8. Tetrahedral • AX4 • 4 bonded pairs; 0 lone pairs • Bond angle = 109.50

  9. Trigonal Pyramidal • AX3E • 3 bonded pairs; 1 lone pair • Bond angle = <109.50

  10. Bent • AX2E2 • 2 bonded pairs; 2 lone pairs • Bond angle = <109.50

  11. Trigonal Bipyramidal • AX5 • 5 bonded pairs; 0 lone pairs • Bond angle = 900 & 1200
