Workshop Goals/Success Criteria • How do we explain who we are? • Professional Fundraiser at CISV Canada? • Organizational Structure • Achieving continuity and success over the long run • How will the team function • What support should CISV Canada provide? • What is the right balance between junior and adult activities? • Exposure – What can we promise and deliver? • ”Recipes” for raising funds • Matching budget needs to fundraising efforts

How we explain who we are • Explain simply • Sincere and enthusiastic • Don’t overload with information • Be aware of signals from the person/group • Understand target group (person) • Find ”hooks” (what are they interested in/common interests) • Use CISV Slogan ”Building Global Friendship” • Leave CISV business card/CISV written material where natural • Follow up / Invite to CISV Function • ”...we are a global community of dedicated volunteers...”

Who we are • We are a global community of dedicated volunteers creating opportunities for all ages to experience the excitement and enrichment of cultural diversity through our educational programmes. • We are founded on our belief that peace is possible through friendship - and that the real difference can be made by starting with children.

  5. Professional Fundraiser: CISV Canada • Must be a paid position • CISV Canada (NA) and Local Chapters not prepared at the present time (financially or operationally) to make the leap to professionally fundraising • 5 year plan: • Allow Local Chapters achieve fundraising consistency • More co-ordination with each other • More co-ordination and support from CISV Canada • Systematic benchmarking and information gathering • Development of scenario: • Job description • Budget and Financing – how will the position be paid for, how will the money be allocated to the Local Chapters / what is necessary for NA • Detailed description concerning how fundraising activities will be coordinated between the NA and the Local Chapters

Fundraising Organization Structure • Fundraising team in each Local Chapter • Team integrated into Chapter activities • Fundraising success is the symptom of a healthy chapter • Local Chapters work together across Canada • Communication, including Wiki website • Benchmarking important – what works / what does not? • Followup and support from CISV International • Followup and support from CISV Canada • Long term plan for fundraising professional • How should the juniors and the adults work together? • What is the situation now? • What is the correct balance?

  7. Why Companies will sponsor CISV Positive Public Focus Locally With the sponsorship of a CISV event, the company’s association will be visible and positive on the local level. Positive Media Companies want to be associated with a winner that is doing good work locally, nationally, and internationally! Marketing Exposure - logo on the CISV website - on site exposure such as their logo on a CISV tshirt - banners at the actual activity or event General Image Enrichment The image of a sponsor company will be improved over time when associated with a positive, energetic organization such as CISV. Corporate Social Responsibility The sponsor shows to their employees, to the community and to the media that they care about the positive social values.

Keep in mind the following: • First impressions are often the lasting impressions • Use your ‘strongest card’ • Prepare yourself: • How is your audience • How much they know about CISV • Have they sponsored CISV already before • Find out if the company sponsored any events or projects before • Has the company a history of sponsoring events, charities, etc.

Using your Contact Network • Develop your contact list • Business/Industry • Foundations, Organizations etc. • Governmental • IMPORTANT: • Periodical communication with people on the contact list • Give them the feeling they are part of our “CISV World” Don’t contact your contacts just when you need something!!!

  11. Remember: “Keep organized, and keep up to date” • Typical mistakes: • More than one person contact with different people • Forgetting to follow up • Not doing what you have said … it is essential to keep a good overview!!!

Eight Observations to keep in mind • Set Concrete Goals • Don’t be shy about using contacts • Be Prepared for Rejection • Ask for the Sponsorship – they might just say ‘Yes’ • Document your activities • Plan early and plan well • Believe in your qualities – and your ‘product’ • Show the world the values that CISV represents
