  2. Communication Competence • Communication competence is the ability to achieve one’s goals in a manner that, ideally, maintains or enhances the relationship in which the communication occurs.

  3. Characteristics • A wide range of behaviors • Ability to choose the right behavior • Skill at performing the behavior

  4. Characteristics • Empathy (the emotional ability to feel what others feel) • Cognitive complexity (the intellectual ability to see issues from different perspectives)

  5. Characteristics • Self-monitoring (being aware of the messages you send, consciously and unconsciously) • Commitment to the relationship
