  1. Unidad 2 Lección 3 Unit 2 Chapter 3

  2. Comparatives • Spanish uses various structures when making equal or unequal comparisons. • If two things are not equal, they are unequal. • We are not the same height. You are taller than I. Unequal comparisons: Ellos salen más que nosotros. Este disco cuesta menos que ése. Tú hablas mejor que yo pero escribes peor que yo. Ella es mayor que tú pero menos que yo.

  3. Comparatives • When making unequal comparisons with más que and menos que, the thing or quality being compared is often expressed between más or menos and que: Jorge es más alto que Alberto. Ana corre más rapido que tú. Tengo menos dinero que tú.

  4. Comparatives • Some unequal comparisons are made with: mejor = better mayor = older peor = worse menor = younger Esta pizza está peor que la otra. Mi hermano es mayor que yo. • If the comparative is followed by a number, use “de” rather than “que” Hay menos de veinte estudiantes en la clase.

  5. Comparatives Equal Comparisons • When things are being compared have equal characteristics, the comparisons of equality is used. The book is as good as the movie. The boy is as tall as the girl. • Equal comparisons are made with tan…como…tanto, depending on whether the comparison being made refers to an adjective or adverb, or a noun. ¿Es tan inteligente como yo? Tú tienes tantos libros como yo.

  6. Comparatives La película es tan buena como el libro. Julia no come tan tarde como su hermano No hay tanta limonada como leche. Esta clase tiene tantos chicos como chicas.

  7. Comparatives • Choose the form of tanto to agree with the noun it modifies. Tanto dinero Tanta paciencia Tantos libros Tantas plumas • When actions (not things) are being compared, and there is no adjective, use the following formula. Angela cocina tanto como Maria.

  8. Superlatives • You have already learned that the –ísimo form of an adjective is used to express a very high degree (really, extremely, very) of the characteristics that adjectives names. • Superlatives are used to indicate that something has the most of a particular quality ( english suffix “-est”) Esta hamburguesa está riquísima.( This hamburger is really delicious) Kyli y Aubrey son inteligentísimas. ( Kyli and Aubrey are extremely smart.) Es buenísima. ( It’s very very good.)

  9. Superlatives • To express the highest degree of quality, Spanish uses the definite article (el, la, los, las)with the thing or quality being compared before the comparative construction. Éstas son las blusas más bonitas. Tienen el carro menos elegante. El Amazonas es el río más largo de Sudamérica.

  10. Superlatives • When the thing or quality being compared is not mentioned, the definite article alone precedes the comparative structure. Éstos son los menos importantes.

  11. Superlatives • When referring to the best/worst or the oldest/youngest, Spanish uses mejor/peor and mayor/menor preceded by the definite article. Note that de is used when the comparison group is mentioned. Éstos son los mejores estudiantes del colegio. Es verdad. Somos los mejores. Acabo de ver la peor película del año.
