  3. What is a DISEASE? • Illness that affects proper functioning of the body or mind.

  4. Communicable Disease • can "catch" from someone or something else. (contagious)

  5. Non-Communicable Diseases • NOT transferrable from someone or something else.

  6. Sexually Transmitted Infection(STI) • A communicable disease that spreads mostly through sexual contact

  7. Virus • Cannot be cured

  8. Infection • Can be cured

  11. How do you get an STI? • Any type of sexual activity • Body contact of infected areas • bodily fluids • blood • Needles

  12. Signs and Symptoms • Sores • Lumps • Bumps • Itching • Burning • Unusual discharges • Foul odors *they’re may be no signs or symptoms at all!!!

  13. What if I ignore it? • Severe infections • Sterility or inability to have children • Can be passed to your children • Death

  14. Diagnosis • a blood sample • a urine sample • a swab of the inside of the mouth • a swab from the genitals • a swab of any discharge or sores

  16. Prevention • Abstinence (100% effective) • Vaccinations • Condoms • Limiting sexual partners

  17. HIV and AIDS • What is HIV? • (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) • Attacks the body’s immune system • What is AIDS? • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome • Unable to fight off infections • FATAL! VIRUS

  18. How do you get HIV? • Any type of sexual activity • Blood (accidents, needles, tatoos) • Untreated HIV ultimately leads to AIDS

  19. Symptoms of HIV and AIDS • HIV • May be no symptoms for years • Recurring sicknesses • AIDS • Extreme weakness and fatigue • Weight loss • Frequent fevers • White spots in the mouth or throat • Chronic diarrhea

  20. Treatment • Anti-Viral Medication • Delay AIDS

  21. Prevention • Abstinence • Condoms • Limiting Sexual Partners • Avoiding direct contact with blood • Avoid sharing needles

  22. HerpesWhat is it? • HSV 1 (Herpes Symplex 1) • Virus • Cold Sore, mouth, face or nose • HPV2 (Herpes Symplex 2) • Virus • Genitals or surrounding area

  23. Herpes – How do you get it? • HSV 1: saliva • HSV 2: sexual contact or contact with open sores

  24. Symptoms • HSV 1 • Mouth or face • HSV 2 • On or around the genitals • first notice itching or pain • sores a few days later • start out as red bumps that soon turn into red, watery blisters. • The sores may open up, ooze fluid or bleed, and then heal within the next 2 to 4 weeks.

  25. Pubic Lice • Tiny insects that feed off of your blood • Look like “crabs” • An STD that you can get without sexual activity

  26. How do you get it? • Sexual contact • Infected clothing, towels, bedding

  27. Signs & Symptoms • INTENSE itching • Tiny white/yellowish eggs in the pubic hair • Small grayish bites around the pubic area • Small brown specks in your underwear

  28. Treatment • Medicated creams to kill lice and eggs • Wash bedding, towels and clothing in HOT water

  29. Syphillis • What is it? • STD caused by a bacteria • How do you get it? • direct contact with a sore, known as a chancre ( pronounced “kang-ker”) • Any sexual contact

  30. Symptoms • Primary Stage 1: • painless sore “chancre” that lasts 3-6 weeks • Secondary Stage 2: • Reddish brown spots both on palms and the bottoms of the feet • Gray or white lesions in the mouth, underarms, and groin

  31. Late Stages • Can appear 10–20 years later • Damage internal organs • Paralysis • Numbness • Blindness • Dementia • Death

  32. Treatment • No over the counter treatments • Injections
