  2. Born • Levi Strauss was born on February 26,1829 in Bavaria, Germany • His parents were Hirsch Strauss and Rebecca Haas Strauss, both Jewish

  4. Background • In 1843 in moved to the U.S. to live with his uncle for the next 5 years • In 1847, Strauss, his mother and 2 sisters moved to NYC to join his brothers Jonas and Louis Löb in their dry goods business • By 1850 he had adopted the name Levi Strauss

  5. Business • Strauss and his brother-in-law David Stern opened a dry goods wholesale business called Levi Stauss & Co. • They delivered goods through mining camps in California • Miners complained of their cotton britches splitting, therefore Levi constructed sturdier jeans made with serge fabric ( later known as denim)

Business • In 1872, Levis received a letter from Jacob Davis, a Reno, Nevada tailor • He suggested they take out a patent together for Levi’s jeans since he didn’t have enough money to do it himself • On May 20,1873, Strauss and Davis received United States patent # 139121 for using copper rivets to strengthen the pockets of denim work pants

Levi Stauss & Co. • Began manufacturing the first of the famous Levi’s brand of jeans in San Francisco • Levi Strauss died in 1902 and was buried in Colma • He left his thriving manufacturing and dry goods business to his four nephews • The late Peter Haas and his family are the primary heirs to the Levi Strauss fortune
