  3. The Status of Online Education… The overall number of K-12 students engaged in online courses in 2005-2006, is estimated at 700,000. From K–12 ONLINE LEARNING:  A SURVEY OF U.S. SCHOOL DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS, Sloan-C http://www.sloan-c.org/publications/survey/k-12_06.asp

The Status of Online Education… Almost two-thirds of the responding public school districts are offering online courses: • 63.1% had one or more students enrolled in a fully online or blended course. • 57.9% had one or more students enrolled in a fully online course. • 32.4% had one or more students enrolled in a blended course.

  5. The Status of Online Education… Over 60% of school districts with students enrolled in online courses anticipate their online enrollments will grow.  Over the next two years districts predict online enrollments will increase by 19% and blended enrollments by 23%.

  6. The Status of Online Education Michigan passed a state law requiring an online learning experience for high school graduation. Half the states have some form of state-led online education program.

  7. 21st Century Schools.com What about technology resources? There should be full access to technology.  If students do not have computers or access to the Internet at home, we will find a way to provide it for them.  If we can, we will obtain laptops for every student and teacher.  Buildings will need to be wired in such a way that students can access their files, as well as the Internet, from anywhere in the school.  Various labs and learning centers should be set up around the campus.  Art, music, theatre, television, radio and film studios can be created with relatively small expenditures.  All classrooms should have televisions to watch broadcasts created by their school as well as by other schools in the district. 

  8. 21st Century Skills Project 21stCenturySkills.org • Core Subjects: Upgrade our English, reading/language arts, mathematics, science, world languages, civics, government, economics, arts, history, and geography programs. • 21st Century Learning Skills: Integrate additional information and communication skills, thinking and problem-solving skills, personal and workplace productivity skills throughout the educational experience. • 21st Century Tools: Expand access and use of technology tools and include information and communication technologies such as computers, networking, and other technologies, audio, video, multimedia and other digital tools, along with online learning resources and aligned digital content, software and adequate hardware for all students.

New Legislation • The “10,000 Teachers, 10 Million Minds” Science and Math Scholarship Act • establish a teacher education program at the NSF to encourage math, science, and engineering faculty to work with education faculty to improve the preparation of mathematics and science teachers. • provide scholarships to students in STEM fields who commit to becoming mathematics and science teachers at elementary and secondary schools, • increase teacher training institutes at NSF and the Department of Energy, and support master’s degree programs for mathematics and science teachers • establish a laboratory science pilot project at NSF.

  18. TeraGrid Challenge Expand the awareness, knowledge, and understanding of HPC in high schools and underserved populations.

  19. Step 1 Build and give away virtual high school courses on HPC and TeraGrid topics

  20. Step 2 Build and offer virtual undergrad and graduate courses to HBCUs, HSIs, and Tribal Colleges on HPC and TeraGrid topics.

  21. Step 3 Build and provide a resource library of Learning Objects on HPC and TeraGrid topics.

  22. Step 4 Create your own version of the “Committee of 10” then create a vision for education in the 21st Century.
