  1. Guidance Counselor Update August 16, 2011 Woodham Middle School South Lecture Hall Kelly Low Lyn Harris Psychological Services

  2. AGENDA • Update on the PMP—A Happy Change! • RtI Q & A • New Cum File Color = PURPLE for RtI • Alert to Kindergarten Teachers • Support for RtI Implementation

  3. O Happy Daayyyy… The PMP is SIMPLIFIED!

  4. How So? • All sections are eliminated except Reading, Mathematics, and documentation of Progress Monitoring conversations • Tier II Behavior Plan/data will be depicted on ERASE Form • Student Records Review takes care of attendance • Written expression is being added to the reading section

  5. RtI Q & A QUESTION: • Is RtI the PMP? ANSWER: • The PMP is a part of the RtI process. Per Florida Statute, a PMP is required for all children scoring at Level 1 or 2 on FCAT reading and/or mathematics. However, the PMP/RtI process can end there if no remediation is required.

  6. However, the PMP is VERY Useful! • To ensure usefulness of the PMP (beyond compliance with state statute) Escambia County uses the PMP to document interventions for all struggling students (Tier II). • The only thing we add to the PMP at this point so we can use it for RtI purposes is the Tier II worksheet. • The Tier II worksheet is added because we have to be specific about intervention implementation AND visually show data.

  7. RtI Q & A QUESTION: So, how do you decide if a child should be Tier II? ANSWER: There are two answers to this. Caveat about school populations and upside down triangles…it’s a Leadership Team decision. When the data shows that the student is struggling, and the achievement gap is not closing sufficiently to allow meeting benchmarks. At that point, the PMP becomesTier II of RtI and progress monitoring data is depicted on the Tier II worksheet.

  8. RtI Q & A QUESTION: Tell me again…exactly what data is needed in Tier II? ANSWER: • Biweekly data that shows the student’s ongoing progress toward mastery of the skill. • Data that compares the student’s ongoing progress toward the benchmark expectation for that skill.

  9. RtI Q & A QUESTION: Tell me again…exactly what data is needed in Tier III? ANSWER: • Weekly data that shows the student’s ongoing progress toward mastery of the skill. • Data that shows the student’s ongoing progress as compared to peers/class average toward mastery of the skill. • Data that compares the student’s ongoing progress toward the benchmark expectation for that skill.

  10. RtI Q & A QUESTION: Where do I go for help with graphing data? ANSWER: Your School Psychologist can help you with easy ways to depict data.

  11. RtI Q & A QUESTION: We’ve noticed that a lot of RtI data is required on our annual School Improvement Plan. Is RtI actually School Improvement? ANSWER: YES, because it focuses on outcomes! A seamless system for examining the progress of ALL students

  12. MINOR FORMS CHANGES* Tier II form revised Observation form revised Documentation Guidelines revised Frequently Asked Questions revised *Most of this is due to the new Language Impaired identification rules; SLPs will be training all faculties.

  13. Switching Gears…

  14. New Cum File Color • RtI = PURPLE • Schools purchase for K-12 • Psychological Services purchases for Pre-K • As of now, all PreK ESE dismissed from ESE due to “age-ing out” automatically become Tier II students. Includes speech-only.

  15. 2011-2012 Elementary Goals Every elementary campus becomes more comfortable with the RtI process. Every elementary teacher provides the needed data for children in Tier II or III. Every elementary teacher maintains an Intervention Fidelity Log for Tier III.

  16. 2011-2012 Secondary Goals • Every secondary school Leadership Team continues to examine the RtI process and its creative application (at middle, at high). • Every secondary school continues to provide interventions, generally already embedded in the master schedule (and usually driven by FCAT scores). • Every secondary school Leadership Team continues to examine if those interventions are working for students, and tweaks as possible to obtain maximum benefit within the curricular structure.

  17. Your Turn On The Psych Services Website: Forms for Leadership Team reflection (pink/green): What would you like assistance with for • you? • your leadership team? • your faculty? Let’s Share on the Web! Send us your good stuff! We will scan it and provide access to everyone via the Psychological Services website.
