Indexing • FY2006 • 629,000 indexed citations added to MEDLINE. • Highest ever indexing rate (last year was 606,596 indexed citations). • 46,918 gene indexing links created (4% increase from last year). • FY2007 • 175,177 citations indexed in during the 2nd quarter, at a rate of over 700,000 articles per year. • More than 85% of MEDLINE citations now supplied electronically by publishers.

  4. Indexing • New Web-based training program for MEDLINE indexing is the primary instruction method for new indexers. • A version for end-user access to be provided by early summer.

  5. Indexing • Electronic Journal Indexing • 120 online-only journals indexed for MEDLINE, an increase from 107 a year ago. • 276 additional journals - the online version is indexed instead of the print version.

Indexing • Kennedy Institute of Ethics (KIE) - Bioethics data: • NLM supplies over 85% of the bioethics citations creation and indexing. • Contract reduction due to budgetary constraints. • NLM continues to provide funding to support the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature at KIE; it offers search systems and other services for bioethics literature and their own collection.

  7. Bioethics Information Resources • Web resource developed to provide additional support to the subject of bioethics. • www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/bioethics.html • Main links on: • PubMed Special Queries page. • List of NLM Databases and Resources on the NLM Home page.

OLDMEDLINE • Mapping OLDMEDLINE Keywords to current MeSH: • 76% of citations mapped completely (over 1.34 million citations). • These completed records are now converted to the status [PubMed – Indexed for MEDLINE]. • Work continues on mapping the additional keywords. • Conversion of the citations from the 1949 Current List of Medical Literature (CLML) has begun.

  9. PubMed • PubMed – surpassed 17 million records • MEDLINE – over 15.8 million (93%) • In Process records – over 252,000 (1.5%) • OLDMEDLINE – over 420,000 (2.5%) • PubMed-only records – over 524,000 (3%)

PubMed • Usage continues to grow • Searches by Unique IPs • March 2006 : Nearly 9.8 million unique IPs • March 2007: Nearly 11.8 million unique IPs • Total number of searches • March 2006: Over 82.0 million searches • March 2007: Over 82.3 million searches • Page views • March 2006: Over 377 million page views • March 2007: Over 423 million page views

  11. PubMed Enhancements • New version of the Entrez system being developed. • Beta version made available for review this spring. • New system to be coming online soon. • Foundation for the next generation of features and capabilities on Entrez databases, including PubMed.

PubMed Enhancements • AbstractPlus view • New default view • Single citation display – customizable selection using My NCBI • Library icons • New system version displays a single library icon in upper right hand corner – different size (100 pixels x 25 pixels) • If users activate more than one icon, the icon displayed at the top will be selected according to the following priority: • Library LinkOut full text icon • Library LinkOut print icon • Outside Tool icon

PubMed Central • Number of unique IPs searching PMC: • Tremendous growth in searching. • April = 4,290,400. • March = 3,290,615. • Statistics as of May 1: • 331 journals participating in PMC (249 last year). • Covering over 969,278 articles (675,00 last year). • Announcements of new PMC titles and coverage appear regularly in the NLM Technical Bulletin.

PMC Scanning Project • Journal Back Issues loaded to PubMed. • 39 Completed Journals and growing. • 70,231 total citations added. • From journals such as PNAS, Plant Physiology, Journal of Physiology, Journal of Clinical Pathology, and Journal of Anatomy • Next step, adding abstracts found in PMC citations not found in PubMed Citations.

  16. PMC Scanning Project • From the 38 completed PMC back issue scanned titles: • 40,640 new abstracts added from 23 titles. • 15 titles did not have new abstracts to add. • Process now part of standard workflow for PMC scanned citations to be included in MEDLINE/PubMed.

  17. 3rd Party Back Issue Citations • Publisher requests to include their retrospective data. • Goal: • Load citations for journal issues not previously included in MEDLINE/PubMed. • New citations published from 1966 and up will be put into MEDLINE format. • These citations will not be indexed with MeSH. • Also, add abstracts from Publisher citations that are not found in MEDLINE citations. • Slow process, dependent upon QA testing and review.

LinkOut • 5,772 journals with LinkOut links. • Activity: 26 million hits/month; 1.1million per work day • PubMed Citations: • 47.8% have full text links. • 10.3% have free full text links. • PubMed citations from 1999 on: • 82.5% have full text links. • 17.8% have free full text links. • LinkOut for Libraries program • 1,733 Libraries participating as of May 8. • 1,485 reported at this time last year.

  20. NCBI / Genetic Alliance Web Resource • New Web site feature on www.geneticalliance.org site. • Accessed through the “Disease InfoSearch” feature. • Designed to help patients, care givers, and health professionals easily locate & navigate information on genetic disorders.

  22. Gateway • Added access to a new collection: Profiles in Science • Now searches 23 collections • Meeting Abstracts: Added abstracts from 2 Health Technology Assessment International Meetings • HSRProj: updates bring total number of records to >7,300

Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) • Follow up on MeSH Subheading Consolidation Proposal: • NLM analyzed all comments, suggestions and feedback. • Considered the potential impact on the searching public, Network libraries and internal NLM processes. • Decision to retain the current subheadings in their present form was announced in January 2007.

  24. Training • National Training Center & Clearinghouse (NTCC) 5-year contract was awarded last year to the New York Academy of Medicine. • Over 1,100 users have taken our training courses throughout the country, covering PubMed, Gateway, ClinicalTrials.gov, TOXNET, UMLS. • PubMed Tutorial updated twice. • Two new QuickTours on using My NCBI have been added.

Training • MEDLINE / PubMed Resources Guide • Detailed information about MEDLINE data and searching PubMed. • Includes sources for news, overviews, data structure and variables, statistics, training resources and more. • Link found under the “Especially for Librarians” on the NLM home page, and on the Bibliographic Services Division home page.

Training • NLM Theater • Over 14 NLM products and services are being discussed and demonstrated. • Experimenting with recording the theater presentations with Adobe Connect, and posting them on the NLM Web site along with the PowerPoint slides. • Working with NTCC to develop live online clinics on using NLM products and services • Beginning in August – brief session on searching for chemicals and drugs in PubMed

NLM Technical Bulletin • Usage: • Over 500 visits per day. • Nearly 1,500 page views per day. • New List of the indexes: • Chronological list. • “Articles About” lists: • PubMed. • GateWay. • Environmental Health and Toxicology – new entry. • Sign-up for weekly NLM Announces email or for the RSS feed of the Technical Bulletin.

Technical Services Division • 2007 edition of the NLM Classification available April 2006. • Online version (wwwcf.nlm.nih.gov/class/). • PDF version (www.nlm.nih.gov/class/terms_cond.html). • Includes revised animated tutorial (Quick Tour) on searching. • Title abbreviations (TAs) • Now accepting the title abbreviations assigned by the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) Centre. • TAs modified to match NLM formatting/style (punctuation, capitalization).

  29. Data Distribution • Data distribution program continues to grow, with research areas in academics, biotech, and software development companies leading the way. • Over 436 MEDLINE licensees in FY2006. • 153 Non-USA licensees.

  30. Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) • 4 UMLS releases in 2006: • 2006AA released February 13 • 2006AB released May 8. • 2006AC released July 14. • 2006AD released November 2. • 3 releases planned for 2007; 2007AA released January 1.

  31. Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) • New SNOMED CT licensing agreement put into place on April 26, 2007. • Transfer of ownership of SNOMED CT to the new International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO). • NLM is the U.S. member and founding member of IHTSDO.

  32. DailyMed • http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/ • Provides high quality information about marketed drugs. • Includes FDA approved labels (package inserts). • 2,629 approved prescription drugs included in the database.

  33. Specialized Information Services (SIS) • TOXLINE Unified - Search results from TOXLINE Core & TOXLINE Special merged (August 2006). • TOX MAP: • Enhanced, more accurate map presentations. • Improved location data using enhanced data from EPA. • Includes 2005 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) data. • ToxMystery launched – interactive learning site for 7–10 year olds (October 2006). • WISER 2.3 released (December 2006). • ToxSeek updated with an enhanced meta-search engine and clustering tool (March 2007).

  34. LSTRC Accepted Journals • Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC) – reviews new titles for inclusion in MEDLINE. • New Web page identifying selected titles: www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/lstrc/new_titles.html • Link on BSD web page. • Updated roughly 4-6 weeks after LSTRC meeting.
