  1. SUMMER LAGU MATH INSTITUTESTEM Topic 4: Inquiry-Based Instruction for Geometry Dym San Nicolas Luz Erni Gemma de Guzman

  2. What is STEM? • STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics • STEM have been a normal part of educational vocabulary since 2001 • It was started by Judith A. Ramaley, the former director of the National Science Foundation’s education and human-resources division • STEM is our response as one nation to the lack of students’ interest in the field of science, mathematics, and engineering

  3. What is STEM? • STEM approach to education is designed to reform the teaching of mathematics and science by incorporating technology and engineering into regular curriculum • STEM education attempts to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and requiring students to actively engage in a situation in order to find its solution

  4. STEM Education Our students will become… • Problem-solvers • Innovators • Inventors • Self-reliant • Logical thinkers • Technologically literate

  5. STEM Education • Problem-solvers Students are able to define questions and problems, design investigations to gather data, collect and organize data, draw conclusions, and then apply understandings to new and unique situations. • Innovators Students creatively use science, mathematics, and technology concepts and principles by applying them to the engineering design process. • Inventors Students recognize the needs of the world and creatively design, test, redesign, and then implement solutions (engineering process).

  6. STEM Education • Self-reliant Students are able to use initiative and self-motivation to set agendas, develop and gain self-confidence, and work within time specified time frames. • Logical thinkers Students are able to apply rational and logical thought processes of science, mathematics, and engineering design to innovation and invention. • Technologically literate Students understand and explain the nature of technology, develop the skills needed, and apply technology appropriately.

  7. STEM Education on Guam Guam Department of Education Pilot Schools George Washington High School Luis P. Untalan Middle School Price Elementary School

  8. What is STEM on Guam? The goal of the Guam Department of Education’s Project STEM are… • To prepare students for professional and technical careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; • To improve student achievement in Math and Science through innovative curriculum and teaching strategies that provide students opportunities to put theoretical concepts into practice and • To cultivate interest in Math, Science, and Technology among students who are socio-economically disadvantaged and/or are linguistically/culturally diverse.

  9. STEM Academy on Guam • Increase the academic readiness and motivation to create an inquiry-based, problem-solving learning environment that engages students in academic discourse in Guam public schools. • The STEM Academy seeks to empower students by developing their ability to self-discover in a dynamic and global society.
