Acknowledge Traditional Owners The mining operations of Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) are located on Aboriginal land and are surrounded by, but separate from, Kakadu National Park. ERA respectfully acknowledges the Mirarr, Traditional Owners of the land on which the Ranger mine is situated.
ERA has mined uranium oxide at Ranger for three decades, producing over 110,000 tonnes World class resources with significant major project opportunities Indigenous employment has significantly increased and represents 18 per cent of workforce Over 550 employees (FIFO and Jabiru residents) NT publicly listed company (68.4 per cent owned by Rio Tinto) Ranger mine is arguably the most regulated and scrutinised mine in Australia The surrounding environment remains protected ERA makes a vital social and economic contribution locally, nationally and internationally Major projects recently announced $220 Brine Concentrator $120 million Ranger 3 Deeps exploration decline $55 million Ranger 3 Deeps feasibility study $40 million exploration programme ERA company overview
Three times more likely to be killed on NT roads • Tragically, one person dies and ten people are seriously injured on Northern Territory roads each week • Territory road users are three times more likely to be killed than road users anywhere in Australia • From 2001 – 2010, 505 people died on Territory roads • 5,040 people were seriously injured (treated and taken to hospital) • On average, over the last 10 years: • 75% occur in rural areas and 25% in urban areas • 57% of all fatal crashes were either single vehicle run off road or overturned • Key factors that contribute to crashes include vehicle safety, roads and roadsides, vehicle speed and road user behaviour (seatbelts, alcohol, fatigue)
ERA is committed to enhancing road safety • ERA takes road safety very seriously • Light vehicle travel between Darwin and Jabiru represents the biggest risk to our people • measured by Semi Quantitative Risk Assessment (SQRA, Rio Tinto standard) • rated in top seven risks as part of ERA’s Critical Control Management Plan • ERA has a dedicated Light Vehicle Safety Team, chaired by ERA Chief Executive, which began its work in 2010 • Initiatives devised and implemented by this committee since its formation include; • Revision and implementation of a high standard Light Vehicle Policy that sets down rules all employees and contractors must follow while driving on ERA business • Purchase of new, safer fleet vehicles, satellite phones • Staff briefings featuring Police and other road safety experts • Road safety kits, including first aid kits, tyre changing tools and Personal Protective Equipment rolled out • Rob Atkinson also met with ERA’s top 20 largest spend contractor companies. Owners and Directors from these companies provided letters of commitment to road safety
ERA safe driving rules • Complete all applicable vehicle safety checks • Notify your colleague or supervisor of your travel plans and inform them when departing and arriving at your destination • Do not exceed 110km/ph while driving on ERA business (open road is 130 km) • Drive with your headlights activated at all times • Stop and sign in at the Bark Hut en route to Ranger or Darwin • Watch for hazards on the Arnhem, Kakadu and Stuart highways – these can include road trains, tourist vehicles, roaming animals and seasonal extremes such as deluges and water on the roads • All road travel must be in daylight
Managing ERA’s number one risk • Arnhem highway 260 km connecting Darwin and Jabiru • Approximately 1,000 vehicles per annum on ERA business sign in at the Bark Hut • Average 3 - 5 fatalities per year on this highway • ERA safe driving DVD • NT emergency services, local transport contractors and ERA staff participated in the filming • Cooperative approach between all organisations about safety messages http://www.energyres.com.au/whatwedo/2728.asp#
