  1. WHAT IS ALCOHOL? IS ALCOHOL ABUSE GENETIC? ALCOHOL’S ENTRANCE AND EXIT IN/OUT OF THE BODY ALCOHOL’S EFFECT ON THE BODY THE BODY’S RESPONSE ALCOHOLIC CONCENTRATION

  2. WHAT IS ALCOHOL? • It is a clear liquid at room temperature. • It is less dense than water • It evaporates at a lower temperature than water • It is soluble in water • It is FLAMMABLE

  3. WHAT IS ALCOHOL? Alcohol can be made 4 ways: • FERMENTATION of fruit or grain mixtures • DISTILLATION of fermented fruit or grain mixtures • CHEMICAL MUNIPULATION of fossil fuels • CHEMICAL COMBINATION of hydrogen and carbon monoxide

  4. WHAT IS ALCOHOL? The alcohol in alcoholic beverages is ethyl alcohol commonly known as ethanol H | H3C – C – O – H | H : Molecularstructure

  5. Alcohol Abuse WHAT IS ALCOHOL? IS ALCOHOL ABUSE GENETIC? ALCOHOL’S ENTRANCE AND EXIT IN\OUT OF THE BODY ALCOHOL’S EFFECT ON THE BODY THE BODY’S RESPONSE ALCOHOLIC CONCENTRATION

  6. Where Does Alcohol Abuse Come From? It is believed by some that alcohol abuse is a physiological disorder. Others believe that it is an inherited physiological disorder.

  9. How Alcohol Enters The Body • After drinking alcohol, 20% is absorbed in the stomach and 80% is absorbed in the small intestine. • This means that 100% of alcohol consumed is absorbed by the body

  10. How Alcohol Enters The Body • The rate of alcoholic absorption is affected by: • The concentration of alcohol in the beverage • The type of drink • The fullness of the stomach • THE HIGHER THE CONCENTRATION THE FASTER THE ABSORPTION • CARBONATED DRINKS HELP SPEED THE ABSORPTION PROCESS • FOOD SLOWS DOWN THE ALCOHOL ABSORPTION

  11. How Alcohol Enters The Body • After being absorbed, alcohol enters the blood stream by dissolving in the water of the blood. • It goes on to dissolve in the water inside the tissue of the body. (Note: It does not dissolve in fat, because alcohol is insoluble in fat.)

  12. How Alcohol Exits The Body • 5% of the absorbed alcohol is eliminated by the kidney in the urine. • Another 5% is exhaled by the lungs. • The liver breaks the remaining 90% into acetic acid.

  13. oFf ThE wAlL fAcT AN AVERAGE PERSON CAN ELIMINATE 0.5 OZ OF ALCHOL PER HOUR.

  15. Alcohol’s Effect With an increasing BAC, alcohol’s effects can be organized into 6 categories: Euphoria Excitement Confusion Stupor Coma Death

  16. Alcohol’s Effect: Euphoria • The person becomes more self-confident • Attention span shortens • Develop a flushed look • Impaired judgment • Simple movements become difficult

  17. This person was so drunk, he took a picture of his shoe

  18. Alcohol’s Effect: Excitement • Tired • Trouble understanding and remembering • Delayed reactions • Uncoordinated body movements • Unbalanced • Blurred Vision • 5 senses become impaired

  19. Alcohol’s Effect: Confusion • Confused • Become dizzy and may stagger • Very emotional (aggressive or affectionate) • Slurred speech • They may not feel pain as easy

  20. Alcohol’s Effect: Stupor • They can’t stand or walk • Likely to vomit • Go in and out of consciousness

  21. Alcohol’s Effect: Coma • UNCONSCIOUS • Pupils don’t respond appropriately • Cool feeling • Slow and shallow breathing • Slow heart rate

  22. Alcohol’s Effect: Death • DEATH!!

  23. Alcohol Abuse WHAT IS ALCOHOL? IS ALCOHOL ABUSE GENETIC? ALCOHOL’S ENTRANCE AND EXIT IN/OUT OF THE BODY ALCOHOL’S EFFECT ON THE BODY THE BODY’S RESPONSE ALCOHOLIC CONCENTRATION

  24. The Body’s Response Several different types of body tissues are effected by alcohol. Some are: Brain Tissues Stomach and Intestines Tissues Skin

  25. The Body’s Response: The Brain The cerebral cortex, limbic system, cerebellum, hypothalamus & pituitary gland, and the medulla are affected by alcohol in the given order. Detailed information can be found here

  26. The Body’s Response: Other Systems • Irritates the linings of the stomach and intestines, leading to vomiting • Increases blood flow to stomach and intestines, causing an increase in secretions • Increases blood flow to skin, causing sweat and loss of body heat • Reduced blood flow to muscles, causing muscle aches and the pain of the “hangover”

  27. Body’s Response

  28. The Body’s Response: Other Systems • Hardening of the liver tissue. • Brain mass reduction • High blood pressure • Decreased sex-hormone secretion • Stomach and intestinal ulcers

  29. The Body’s Response: Other Systems And because of a drunk person’s imbalance, bruises and broken bones.
