  2. Objectives • To consider the responsibility of the Science Co-ordinator in terms of progression • To consider opportunities for progression within each strand of Sc4 using the QCA SoW for Science as a model • To consider assessment opportunities

  3. Issues • It is the responsibility of the co-ordinator to ensure coverage and progression through each Key Stage • When using the QCA SoW progression in some topic areas is not straightforward and sometimes year groups miss out altogether • Assessment should be an integral part of the scheme of work in order for the pupils to receive an appropriate learning experience

  4. Light

  5. Sound

  6. Forces

  7. Electricity

  8. The Earth and Beyond

  9. Assessment • Records of pupil attainment should be kept by each teacher and passed on as the children move up • Assessment for Learning strategies as well as assessment of learning should be an integral part of school assessment • Sc1 skills should be taught as an ongoing process and assessed independently – not just ‘whole’ investigations

  10. Teaching enquiry skills • Emphasis is on the ‘teaching’ of skills within QCA units • An assessment point should only include those elements that have been specifically taught • Records of pupil attainment for each element should be kept – this will help inform future emphasis and planning • Certain topic areas lend themselves to specific areas of emphasis – some flexibility to change this providing there is an overall balance
