  1. Warm Up September 27, 2013 • What is matter? • What are the different types (not states) of matter? • What branch of science is the study of matter?

  2. Section 2.1 Notes: Matter Matter is anything with mass and volume • that is made of ATOMS

  3. …a quick review… • MASS: a measure of the amount of matter present (measured in grams) • VOLUME: a measure of the amount of space something occupies (measured in m3 or liters)

  4. Matter can be found as: ELEMENT a pure substance made of ONE kind of atom. COMPOUND  substance made from the atoms of 2 or more different elements that are stuck together (bonded). Elements are found on the periodic table.

  5. element or compound? sulfur

  6. element or compound? Water, H2O

  7. element or compound? helium

  8. element or compound? salt, NaCl

  9. element or compound? aluminum

  10. MIXTURES • Mixtures are composed of more than one type of substance mixed together. • In a homogeneous mixture, the mixture looks uniform throughout • Examples: salt water, lemonade, chocolate ice cream • Also called solutions • In a heterogeneous mixture, the mixture is not uniform • Examples: trail mix, granite, chocolate chip ice cream

  11. homogeneous or heterogeneous? Granite

  12. homogeneous or heterogeneous? Lemonade

  13. homogeneous or heterogeneous? • Greek Salad

  14. homogeneous or heterogeneous? ketchup

  15. homogeneous or heterogeneous? Chocolate Chip Cookie

  16. homogeneous or heterogeneous? Brass (mixture of copper and zinc

  17. Classification of Matter

  18. element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture? Kool Aid

  19. element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture? Silver

  20. element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture? Sand

  21. element, compound, homogeneous mixture or heterogeneous mixture? Carbon Dioxide

  22. Matter Investigation Lab

  23. Cool Down • Title: Matter Brace Map

  24. Homework • Vocabulary Booklet 2.1 (Remember you need a definition and an example/drawing) • Matter • Atom • Element • Compound • Homogeneous Mixture • Heterogeneous Mixture
