About ANU • Established by an Act of Federal Parliament in 1946 • A research-intensive university with a high staff:student ratio • Consistently ranked as one of the top universities in the world * • Member of ‘Group of Eight’ Australian universities • Only Australian member of International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) which includes Yale, Harvard, ETH Zurich (Swiss Institute of Technology), NUS, Peking, Berkeley, Cambridge, Oxford, Copenhagen • Approx 14,300 students and 3,400 staff * Ranked 1st in Australia and 16th in the world by The Times Higher Education Supplement (2006 & 2007). Ranked 1st in Australia and 38th in the world by Newsweek International (August 2006). Structure of the University • The university builds its teaching on the base of its research, resulting in research led education at all levels • Seven Colleges that link research and teaching: • ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences • ANU College of Asia and Pacific Studies • ANU College of Business and Economics • ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science • ANU College of Law • ANU College of Medicine and Health Sciences • ANU College of Science

Graduate Studies Select at ANU • New FLEXIBLE option for PG coursework studies, but not replacing any existing ANU awards • GSS courses can be studied across the graduate course offerings available in all the Colleges (subject to meeting entry requirements) • Alternate avenue to meet personal and professional interests and develop skills and expertise across different learning areas • Course advice and Program planning help available through dedicated GSS Academic Adviser

  8. Structure of Graduate Studies Program • Three new Awards • Certificate of Graduate Studies • Diploma of Graduate Studies • Master of Studies • Utilising existing Graduate Courses but ‘re-packaged’! • All GSS courses are categorised as either • Transitional • Advanced, or • Specialist

GSS course Categories Transitional: • for students from a broad range of backgrounds and learning achievements; and • provide for the acquisition of generic skills; or • provide an informed understanding of contemporary issues; or • provide fundamental knowledge for transition to Advanced or Specialist courses.

  10. GSS course Categories (cont) Advanced:  • for students having reached ‘first degree’ level of assumed knowledge; and • provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or • provide ‘second degree’ and higher levels of knowledge; or • provide for transition to research training programs.

GSS course Categories (cont) Specialist: • for students having reached ‘first degree’ level of assumed knowledge; and • provide for the acquisition of specialist skills; or • provide ‘second degree’ and higher level of knowledge; or • provide for transition to research training programs; or • provide knowledge associated with professional accreditation.

GSS Award Details – 4, 6, 8 course model • Certificate of Graduate Studies • available to students who complete 24 units (4 courses of 6 units each) • Diploma of Graduate Studies • available to those who complete 36 units (6 courses of 6 units each) including a minimum of 12 units from courses in the Advanced or Specialist categories • Master of Studies • available to those who complete 48 units (8 graduate courses of 6 units each) including a minimum of 24 units from courses in the advanced and/or specialist categories

GSS Online Course Details – Example Operations Management ENGN8005  - Details Course Details | Fees and Dates Offered By: Dept Engineering Academic Career: Graduate Coursework Course Subject: Engineering Offered in: Second Semester, 2008 Unit Value: 6 units Course Description: Introduction of various qualitative and quantitative methods used in the management of manufacturing operations with a focus on the effective management of resources to achieve delivery of quality products and services. Areas covered will include work flow types including job, batch and flow systems, line balancing, work study methods including time and motion study, JIT techniques, the role of statistical process control techniques and quality assurance methods in a TQM philosophy, reliability analysis, the managment of variation, and system approaches to operations. GSS Admission Requirements • Minimum standard for entry into GSS is the completion of an undergraduate degree • However, some courses have additional requirements such as undergraduate study in a particular academic discipline, eg: • “Fundamentals of Nuclear Science”, requires general Science knowledge, see http://studyat.anu.edu.au/courses/PHYS8201;details.html • Details of specific entry requirements for courses are included in the information for each course. Entry to some courses may be possible through recognition of prior learning and work experience. • ANU currently examining alternative entry pathways which includes RPL and a possible graduate level entry test
