  9. PROGRAM FOR COOPERATIVE CATALOGING (PCC) • National-level records • Cataloged locally • Contributed to world record pool • Dynamic records shared and updated.

  10. PRESSURE POINTS: • Rising costs • Lower budgets • Cost/benefit • Savings/harm.

  11. SUCCESSOR TO NCCP • Lower cost to participate • Easier interconnectivity • Fewer system-based limitations.

  12. PCC GOALS • To increase the supply of quality records in the world cataloging record pool • To increase the number of catalogers and cataloging institutions contributing such records.

  13. A QUALITY RECORD • Dependably usable.

  14. USABILITY Requires little or no • Verification • Modification, or • Postponement of use.

  15. DEPENDABILITY: Count on: • Accurate description • Controlled access points.

  16. CORE STANDARD CHARACTERISTICS • Minimum standard • Identification/retrieval • Dependably usable • Known quantity.

  17. A MINIMUM STANDARD • Minimum not minimal • Provides floor or base • “Upwardly compatible” • May include additional fields up to full.

  18. CORE STANDARD • First defined for books materials • Then defined for other types of materials • Apply in spirit as well as letter to nonbook materials.

  19. BOTH CORE AND FULL Standards have the same: • Authority control for headings • Adherence to rules/practices • Main entry choice and form • Title page & series transcription • Physical description.

  20. PARADIGM SHIFT: LIMIT: You must/must not VS. FLOOR: You must at least/you may add (up to full)

  21. CORE RECORDS: • Are national-level records • Provide dependable cataloging within full record catalogs • Distinguish local and nonlocal data as with full records.

  22. A CORE RECORD CONTAINS: • At least Core Standard elements • Additional elements if called for up to full level.

  23. CORE RECORD JUDGEMENT BOUNDED BY: • AACR2R and LCRIs • Core record standard • Institutional policies • Identification / retrieval.

  24. CORE GUIDELINES: 1. Would the proposed addition be correct in a full record? 2a. Will the proposed addition materially aid retrievability? or 2b. Will the proposed addition materially aid identification?

  25. CORE RECORDS: • Source = c • Enc Lvl = 4 (or 039 core in OCLC) • 042 = pcc • 040 = Library’s symbol.

  26. APPLYING THE CORE STANDARD: Q. Do you ever remove data from a record to meet the core standard? A. NO.

  27. APPLYING THE CORE STANDARD: Q. If a Core Standard record contains the same fields as a full record, is it coded core or full?

  32. CORE STANDARD -- 240 Uniform title: • Include if known/inferable • Establish if not already established.

  33. CORE STANDARD -- 245-300 • Include all applicable fields • Same as full-level cataloging.

  34. CORE STANDARD -- 4XX/8XX Series: • Transcribe series if present • Tracing optional • If traced, support with SAR.

  35. CORE STANDARD -- 5XX If applicable, make notes at least for: • Title source if not t.p. • Contents if multipart items have separate titles • Thesis note (502) • Reproduction note (533).

  36. CORE STANDARD -- 5XX Some Notes Issues: • Language, translation (2.7B2) • Statements of Responsibility (2.7B6) • Dissertations • Other notes.

  37. CORE STANDARD -- 6XX If applicable, include: At least 1 subject heading -- from recognized list -- at appropriate level of specificity.

  38. SOME SUBJECT ISSUES Use of other thesauri or lists LCSH issues: -- lack of specific headings -- paired or multiple headings Submitting requests for new headings.

  39. CORE STANDARD -- 7XX (OR 246) If applicable: • Primary added entry relationships • Important title access information • Up to full level.

  40. REVISION ISSUES: Primary added entry relationships • Remember guidelines • Dependably usable records • Retrievability and identification.
