  1. Use of ICT Infrastructure and Digital Knowledge Resources for Promoting Science Education in China Xiao Yun Computer Network Information Center(CNIC) Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) xy@cnic.cn

  2. Outline • Background • A Case Study: Virtual Science Museums of China • Collaborative Web Portal for the future • Cross-cultural Science Education

  3. BackgroundDrivers & Opportunities Advanced in ICT are providing increased public access to knowledge resources and changing the way people learn. Especially the fast going of internet

  4. Background (2) Increased Potential Users Growth of China’s Netizens Source: Survey by China Internet Network Information Center, 2008-07

  5. Background (3) Gaps KEPU (科普), Chinese Pinyin for “Public Appreciation of Science” (informal science education) • By December 2006, 452 KEPU websites are running normally. The number increases by 11% in a year, and accounts for 0.54‰ of China’s websites in total. • Web pages relevant to KEPU are increasing much slower compared with those of other types such as business and entertainment. Source: 2007 China KEPU Report, 2007-10-10

  6. Background (4) Possible Solutions for Bridging the Gap by CAS • Build strong partnership with scientists and encourage them to share research information. • Build a professional team (editor/web designer/IT engineer/scientist…) to “translate” research information for the use of science education. • Build web portals to offer categorical educational resources tailored for a variety of target audiences. • Update to “hook” return users.

  7. Case StudyVirtual Science Museums of China (VSMC) 1) initiated VSMC in 1999, 2) 61 museums in Chinese and 13 in English 3) 40 CAS institutes joined as project partners 5) 60 million audiences 6) CAS is main sponsor, NSFC, MOST and CAST are sponsors

  8. Case Study (2)Update after Wenchuan Earthquake, 2008-05-12

  9. Case Study (3)Public Access to Research Facilities

  10. Case Study (5)Think like a Scientist: Encourage Science Inquiry

  11. Case Study (6) Categorical Educational Resources: Life Sciences (17 museums)

  12. Case Study (7)Categorical Educational Resources: Earth Sciences (14 museums)

  13. Case Study (8)Categorical Educational Resources: Space Sciences (5 museums)

  14. Case Study (9):Categorical Educational Resources: Science History and Engineering (8 museums)

  15. Case Study (10)Categorical Educational Resources: Foundation of Science (4 museums)

  16. Case Study (11) Categorical Educational Resources: Chinese Culture (8 museums)

  17. Collaborative Web Portal for the future Vision CNIC will play a coordinating and leadership role among CAS research institutes in the development of a comprehensive collaborative web portal for promoting public appreciation of science, as well as facilitating science education by working with education practitioners in all settings.

  18. Collaborative Web Portal (2) Mission 1 Integrate current digital resources for science education developed by CAS research institutes (make and implement specifications, categorical and user-friendly web portals)

  19. Collaborative Web Portal (3) Mission 2 Develop new digital resources … (20 new interactive web museums to be built till 2010, chosen from science hotspots such as gene & material sciences)

  20. Collaborative Web Portal (4) Mission 3 Promote public access to research facilities, for instance web cameras for observing animal behaviors, astronomical observatories…

  21. Collaborative Web Portal (5) • Mission 4 • Every institutes of CAS are required to setup science education columns in their website • to release information of science hotspots, key projects… • live webcast of big events and science lectures • archived science lectures

  22. Collaborative Web Portal (6) Mission 5 (what’s additional) - Develop ICT infrastructure as tools for sharing digital educational resources - Build partnership with education practitioners in all settings for better service and evaluation

  23. Financial Support • CAS • 5 Million 2008-2010 • 2) CNIC • 3 Million 2008-2010 • 2) CAST • 2 Million 2008 • 30 million 2009-2011(probably)

  26. Suggestion Hold discussions among participating academies of developing countries to address questions on how to build effective web portals to share information for the use of science education. Hold discussions on how to take joint actions and share educational resources for the public among participating academies. Based on the discussions above, build an effective mechanism to encourage participating academies to establish such web portals in their own countries, and share relevant resources and technologies in a more efficient way. Possible Gap? Can we overcome the barriers of language, culture, way of teaching science and sharing educational resources with the public? Cross-cultural Science Education

  27. Thank you!
