  1. Why Two Testaments? Testament = A covenant; meaning an agreement, promise or pledge between two parties

  2. The Covenant With Adam Genesis 2:16-17 “The LORD God commanded the man, saying, "From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."

  3. Penalty for Breaking Covenant Genesis 3:17-19 “Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground, because from it you were taken;  For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

  4. The Old Covenant • God’s law required obedience. • When Man disobeyed God’s law, the penalty was death. • Under the Old Covenant (Law of Moses), sins could not be forgiven – they could only be covered. • A “New” Covenant was required to forgive and take away sins.

  5. Only One Sin Brings Guilt James 2:10-11 “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.”

  6. Old vs. New Covenant? Hebrews 9:15 “For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

  7. Old vs. New Testament Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  8. Forgiveness Granted For Past Sins Romans 3:25 (NIV) • “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in this blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished”

  9. Harmony of the Two Testaments Was the Gospel Preached to Abraham? Galatians 3:8 “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying,“In you all the nations shall be blessed.” So, what is the gospel message preached to Abraham?

  10. Genesis 12:1-3 (KJV) “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed..” The Promise of God to Abraham

  11. What Was the Promise? Genesis 12:1-3 (KJV ) “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”.

  12. Questions: • 1) God promised Abraham that he would give him all the ___________________ he could see. • 2) The land would be his for how long? ____________________________ • 3) The promise was made to Abraham and who else? ______________________________

  13. Has Abraham Received the Promise? Acts 7:3-5 “And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell. And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.” Abraham’s only possession was a cave he bought to bury his dead

  14. Who, Then, is the Seed? Galatians 3:16 KJV “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” An example of the Apostle Paul encouraging us to read the Bible carefully!

  15. The Gospel “Good News” Galatians 3:26-29 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

  16. Galatians 3:17-19 (NIV) • “The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the _________________ previously established by God and thus do away with the promise. For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in his grace gave it to ___________________ through a promise. What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the _____________________ to whom the promise referred had come.”

  17. Harmony of Scripture • The Old Testament details the promise extended to Abraham. • The New Testament tells us who “the Seed” is! • The New Testament tells us how we can be part of the promise, through baptism into Christ.
