  1. CHEMISTRYCharlie ArbuisoChemistry Teacher Chemistry is the study of matter which means all the gases, liquids, solids, and how they react together.

  2. What is everything made of? ______________________ When these _______________ combine in exact ways, like a recipe, they form into ________________________. When 2 or more kinds of _______________ bond together and form these new compounds, what happened is called a _________________ ________________.

  3. Example Elements: Copper He Zinc W Nickel Cu Tungsten Zn Aluminum Ni Helium Al Can you match the elements to their symbols?

  4. There are many kinds of chemical reactions, Some are boring to watch Some are more fun and amazing! Let’s watch some fun chemistry reactions

  5. Magnesium metal + Hydrochloric acid Magnesium Chloride solution + Hydrogen gas This reaction gets hotter (energy is released too) The gas can be caught in another test tube. The test for hydrogen gas makes a loud pop! The hydrogen gas was “hiding” in the solution and the chemical reaction let it come out.

  6. Elephant Toothpaste Hydrogen peroxide solution with a catalyst will form water and oxygen gas, with energy (heat) also released. This is called exothermic decomposition.

  7. Vinegar + Baking Soda makes a salty water solution + carbon dioxide gas Vinegar is an acid. The baking soda is a base. They will neutralize each other and make bubbles! What does a candle need to keep burning?

  8. A lit candle in a beaker, with baking soda around the bottom. What happens to this burningchemical reaction? Vinegar poured down the side

  9. Acid Base Color Chase! • 1. Water with a few drops of • PHENOLPHTHALEIN indicator. • Add 3 mL of base (what happens?) • Add 3 mL of acid (what happens?) • Add 5 mL of base again • Add 5 ml of acid again • Can this keep happening?

  10. Acid Base Color Chase Again! • 1. Water with a few drops of • Bromothymol Blue indicator. What color is it now? • Add 2 mL of acid (what happens?) • Add 6 mL of base (what happens?) • Add 5 mL of acid again • Add 10 ml of base again • Will this keep happening?

  11. Double Replacement Reaction Copper Sulfate solution Sodium Hydroxide solution What Happens?

  12. FLAME TESTSturn out the lights now! Barium chloride Copper chloride Lithium chloride Strontium chloride Potassium chloride

  13. Chemistry is fun, but it can be dangerous. Do not try any experiments without your parents permission, ever! Always study hard to learn a lot. Always listen to your teachers and your parents. Thank you for letting me come in, do you have any questions now?
