Marangu is a lively market town with a cool climate. The location of the town makes it an ideal starting point for climbing mount Kilimanjaro. • Marangu is also an excellent location for hiking, bird watching and taking in the sights of rural Africa. • The cultural tourism program offers the opportunity for visitors to watch traditional blacksmiths, visit nearby caves and waterfalls as well as experience life in the local chagga tribe. • People around Marangu village are very welcoming and we hope you will enjoy your time with them. • While in Marangu one can learn more about the chagga culture by visiting a traditional chagga house made of straw roofing. Also the traditional food made by bananas and local brew known as Mbege can be tasted.

The lake is filled and drained by underground streams. Located near the slopes of Kilimanjaro, the lake is amazingly clear with steep crater walls. It is the deepest inland water body in Africa with the depth of about 3km. Due to the enormous depth boating is recommended. Visitors can hike at the lake and enjoy the beautiful view and fresh air. After lunch you may rest and enjoy the peace and beauty, or your guide will take your group for a walk above the falls, into the Kilimanjaro rainforest, observing more flora and hopefully, some monkeys or other wildlife.

The crystal clear water runs down the slopes of Kilimanjaro in the deep valleys as sparkling streams. These streams pour their water in the legendry reservoir called Nyumba ya Mungu. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, swimming and walking around the dam to enjoy the spectacular views. Cultural practices of the local people, lifestyle, custom and beliefs are also available.

From here you start trekking with a guide. Hot lunch at the campsite. The trek goes to Chemka waterfalls, where you'll spend the night. Take a swim in the natural bassin of the hot spring. Mt. Kilimanjaro is usually clearly seen from here in the early morning hours. Distance: 14 km. Includes: (LUNCH), (DINNER); and CAMPING. Day 2: Morning swim followed by breakfast. Explore the hot spring surroundings, like farms etc. After lunch drive back to town.

After registration at the park gate, begin hiking through rainforest from the park gate (6,000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9,000 ft). This takes about 3 to 4 hours. There is a stop halfway for picnic lunch. Reach Mandara Hut early in the afternoon. After a short tour at the hut, start descending to Marangu gate, reaching it later in the afternoon. A side trip to Maundi Crater (about 15 minutes away) offers a chance to see the surrounding area as well as the views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Return toMarangu /Moshi in the late afternoon and overnight. Reach Mandara Huts early afternoon. After a short tour at Mandara, you will have an evening meal and stay overnight at the hut. (BLD) Mandara Hut (9,000 ft) – Horombo Huts (12,000 ft)Hiking time: 6 hoursHabitat: Heathland Day 2: After breakfast and packing, leave camp and hike to Horombo Huts (12,000 ft). This section should take around 5 to 6 hrs. You will travel through lower heathland with small shrubs being the main vegetation. There is a stop halfway for lunch. Views of Mawenzi are amazing. The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Huts. Arrive at Horombo Huts mid to late afternoon. Bathrooms are available with cold running water. Dinner and overnight at hut. (BLD)  Descending from Horombo to the Marangu Gate Day 3: After breakfast, pack up gear and descend to Mandara Huts for lunch. Continue on to the park gate and return to Moshi late in the afternoon and overnight. (BLD)   Descending from Horombo to the Marangu Gate Day 4: After breakfast, pack up gear and descend to Mandara Huts for lunch. Continue on to the park gate and return to Moshi late in the afternoon and overnight. (BL)
