Teens and Technology • STATISTICS • 2.5 billion text messages are sent each day in the US • Harmful effects: distraction, academic impact, social impact, medical issues, bullying • 20% teens say they have sent or posted nude or semi-nude photos or videos of themselves • 39% of teens say they sent or posted sexually suggestive messages • 44% of teens say it is common for sexually suggestive text messages to get shared with people other than the intended recipient • Possession vs. distribution (felony and punishable by law) • WHAT CAN PARENTS DO • Learn as much about internet safety as possible • Talk with your kids (start early, open conversation, emphasize values) • Talk through repercussions • Create Facebook profile and be f riends with your teen • Review your child’s friend list on Facebook • Privacy settings on computer/know passwords • Keep computer in common area • Set time parameters • Monitor computer software • Set boundaries with cell phone • RESOURCES • www.onguardonline.gov, www.staysafeonline.com, www.wiredsafety.org, • www.internetsafety.com, www.cyberbully411.org

Administered in September for FREE Scores will be Distributed When the school receives them. • The PLAN® Includes: • Tests in English, math, reading, and science—just like the ACT. • A guide that explains what your scores mean and how you can use them.
