  2. OVERVIEW We will be explaining: • What Biomedical Engineers do • Their salaries • Potential job positions • Current inventions and future trends • Cost of losing a semester • Classes offered in FIU • Main Employers • Ethical Cases

  3. What is Biomedical Engineering? • The branch of engineers that think up and create medical devices. • Stethoscopes • Echograms • CT Scans • Dialysis machines • Even syringes

  4. History • Was first recognized as an official discipline in the 1940’s • But was actually first seen in: • Stethoscope • Prosthetic Body Parts

  5. Sub-disciplines • Instruments and Device Engineers • Design and create a model of what they want to create, and how it is supposed to work. • Some current examples attributed by this branch: • Jarvik-7 artificial • Pace maker • Prosthetic eyes • Prosthetic breasts • Prosthetic testes, limbs, and joints.

  6. Jarvik-7 Artificial Heart Prosthetic Eye Prosthetic Breast Hip Joint Replacement Pump for Insulin Infusion Prosthetic Limbs MRI of Brain

  7. Sub-disciplines • Bio Material Engineers • They obtain the ideas of the Instruments and Device Engineer and make the product biocompatible by choosing materials that are • Non-toxic • Durable • Non-carcinogenic • These are crucial factors considering they will be implanted into a patient

  8. Sub-disciplines • Image Processing • They create non-invasive exploratory machinery, this allows for lower risk investigation of internal problems in a patient • Some machines are • Echograms • Used to view the heart to identify murmurs, or arrhythmia • Also used to monitor fetuses throughout development • CT Scans • Identify tumors, kidney stones, ovarian cysts.

  9. * = required strengths (classes that require math, science, or engineering) Description of Courses at FIU

  10. Possible Functions • Designer • Basically come up with ideas and sketches for biomedical devices • Relates to Instrument and Device Engineer • Analyzer • Analyzes designers idea, and attempts to make it functional as well as biocompatible • Relates to Materials Engineer

  11. Possible Functions • Presenter (To Clients) • Present the new product to doctors hospitals and clinics, proving its simplicity and usefulness in order to have a client to promote this product to patients. • Presenter (To Patients) • This includes doctors, just having information on as well as using the new product so that more people learn of its simplicity and effectiveness.

  12. Sue H. Abreu Career Life: • Nuclear Medicine • U.S. Army Medical Corps • President of ICANL Life Outside Work: • Skydiving • U.S. Parachute Team Volunteer: Team Doctor

  13. Ethical Cases • “Infants Under Pressure” • MedTech fires professional engineer, Sam Wilson, who discovers error in infant respirators • Stem Cell • Human embryos used for research cause controversy • In vitro Fertilization • “test-tube babies”

  14. Future Trends • Healthcare dominating • Innovations: • Browsing brain, world-wide diagnosing • More efficient prosthesis • Cure cancer

  15. % Average change since 2003: 15.8%

  16. Cost of Losing One Semester Over 30 Years

  17. Calculating Cost of Losing One Semester Over 30 Years • For all years after the first: • Let x = years passed, s = Starting Salary • S = Your Salary = s(1.05x) • Comparing Salary (C)= S(1.05) • Loss Per Month = C – S • S(1.05) – S • S(1.05 – 1) • (s(1.05x))(.05)

  18. Calculating Cost of Losing One Semester Over 30 Years

  19. Main Employers In Florida • Cordis Corp., Miami Lakes, FL • Biomedical devices manufacturer • Andrx Corp., Davie, FL • Specialty Pharmaceuticals Developer • Beckman Coulter Inc., Miami, FL • Medical Instrument Systems Manufacturer • Boston Scientific, Miami, FL • Medical Devices Manufacturer • Ivax Corp. , Miami, FL • Pharmaceutical Developer, Manufacturer

  20. Main Employers Nationally 1. ABC Coding Solutions Albuquerque, NM 2. Lumidigm Inc Albuquerque, NM 3. MIOX Corporation Albuquerque, NM 4. Star Cryoelectronics Santa Fe, NM

  21. Job Stability, Internships, and Voluntary Works • Growing healthcare and medical devices industry needs growing number of industry professionals • Internship available at hospitals, clinics, and universities • NIH – National Institute of Health • NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration • Voluntary work can be completed at Mercy Hospital - Miami, FL

  22. Job Postings • Top Ranked Medical Device Company in Bergen County, NJ $55,000 - $70,000 • Quality Engineer • QA Compliance Auditor • Reliability Engineer (Product Surveillance)

  23. The Vision of the BMES is to serve as the lead society and professional home for biomedical engineering and bioengineering by: • Enhancing interactions with industry and clinical medicine • Publishing the high quality journal • Promoting the education of the next generation of biomedical engineers • Maximizing the performance of the discipline

  24. Review • In our presentation, we discussed: • What Biomedical Engineers do • Their salaries • Potential job positions • Current inventions and future trends • Cost of losing a semester • Classes offered in FIU • Main Employers • Ethical Cases
