  1. Art, Animation and Software Development By Sam Steel

  2. Overview • Art & Animation • How does it work? • 3DS Max • Maya • Blender

  3. How does 3D modelling work? • First of all, a designer will draw up a model. These are usually hand-drawn models. There will be several of these designs drawn up until a final is agreed upon by the development team:

  4. How does 3D modelling work? • With a design finalised by the team, the designs will be passed on to a 3D modeller or animator to create a three dimensional skeleton.

  5. How does 3D modelling work? • The next stage of developing the model is to create a skin for it. This will be a 2D picture placed over the top of the 3D model. Models can feature multiple skins depending on how complicated they are.

  6. But what about 2D models and animation? • 2D models are differently. You don’t need to create a 3D skeleton or model for it, you just need to create the 2D image, or sprite. These sprites will be changing in a loop of several images to animated the character or object.

  7. 3DS Max • What is it? • A 3D modelling application developed by Autodesk • What is it used for? • It has been used for TV commercial and architecture visualisations, but most importantly to us, video game development • Who uses it? • 3DS Max is expensive commercial software and will most commonly be used in a professional environment, however it is still used by hobbyist or amateur developers. Some of the biggest projects to use it include Street Fighter 4 as well as in the special effects for the X-Men movies and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

  8. Maya • What is it? • A 3D modelling application developed by Alias but now owned by Autodesk. It features alternative solutions to problems such as animating hair and clothes • What is it used for? • Again, TV, Films and Computer games • Who uses it? • Again, Maya is fairly expensive so it is mostly used by professional designers and developers. It is mostly used in movies, namely Avatar and Ironman, but it has also been used in games such as Uncharted 2.

  9. Blender • What is it? • A 3D modelling application developed by The Blender Foundation • What is it used for? • Most commonly used for games but has been used with movies and on TV • Who uses it? • Blender is free to download, it is used mostly on a hobbyist or amateur level. It has advantages for home users such as a smaller file size on download and installation. It has also been used commercially in the Spiderman 2 movie.

  10. Review • Art & Animation • How does it work? • 3DS Max • Maya • Blender
