Public Outreach Programs Associated with Space Programs • Highlighted here are ways of using education and public outreach on Space to sensitize the public. • The interrelationship between Space activities, education and public outreach. • Expected impacts on the public and the future of Space Science culture in Nigeria.

  3. Space Communication Realms. • Space can be communicated to the public in three main ways: • Formal Education. • Informal Education. • Public Outreach Programs.

  5. Formal Education • Formal education is an important medium that can be used to sensitize the developing minds. • This is the normal classrooms environment. • It is a well organized medium.

  6. Formal Education (Activities) • Textbooks. • Teacher workshops. • Home schooling. • Educational programs at museums. • Educational programs at Libraries • Educational programs at Parks.

  8. Informal Education • Informal education are engaged in unique settings. • Getting the audience together can be difficult. • Expectations from the audience here are usually not much.

  10. Informal Education (Activities) • Educational programs at museums. • Educational programs at Libraries. • Educational programs at Parks. • Museum exhibits. • Field trips. • Hands-on workshops. • Career Talks. • Planetarium shows. • Public Talks. • Slide shows.

  11. Public Outreach • Public Outreach programs are usually outside the classrooms. • We can reach wider public • Shorter time opportunities • Events are usually entertaining!

Interrelationship between Space & Education • First of all, Space is a unique environment. • Virtually everybody can easily be fascinated and inspired by it. • Our limits of curiousness can be stretched by space education. • As a result, there can be spin-off effects to basic science education.

Expected impacts on the public and the future of Space Science culture in Nigeria. • The public become well aware of Space. • The students have better appreciation of science. • Space science and technology is demystified. • They become contributors to the space programs. • The public appreciates & encourages government’s efforts toward the development of Space. • We have future leaders of the industry in the making. • Nigeria becomes a respected voice in the comity of Space-faring nations.

IHY & 2007/2008 • Year 2007 & 2008 are significant in the history of Space. • 2007 will be another 50 years since the International Geophysical Year (IGY), hence International Heliophysical Year (IHY). • Nigeria’s participation in IHY 2007 must be outstanding, and be contributive to the overall success of IHY globally. • We will be able to use this unique opportunity to sensitize the public on Nigeria’s space programs like never before. • I expect that Nigeria will be pro-active on the development of Space Science & Technology.

IHY Nigeria & Public Outreach • We shall constitute an Education & Public Outreach unit within IHY Nigeria. • We shall map out our strategies of reaching the whole country in 2007. • We shall explore relevant funding avenues for this purpose. • We shall use and create new public outreach media for this program. • Nigeria’s participation in this epoch year-long program shall be publicized.
