  1. Wind for Schools(Workforce Development) Larry Flowers National Wind Technology Center November, 2009 NREL is a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC

  2. National (U.S.) – Economic Impacts Cumulative impacts between 2007-2030 (PV) From the 20% Scenario- 300 GW new Onshore and Offshore development Wind energy’s economic “ripple effect” Totals (construction + 20yrs) Indirect & Induced Impacts • Direct Impacts • Payments to Landowners: • $317 M • Local Property Tax Revenue: • $760 M • Construction Phase: • 1.75 M FTE jobs • $111 B to the US economy • Operational Phase: • 1.16 M FTE jobs • $26 B to the US economy • Construction Phase: • 4.46 M FTE jobs • $247 B to the US economy • Operational Phase: • 2.15 M FTE jobs • $60 B to the US economy • Total economic benefit = $444 billion • New jobs during construction = 6.2 M FTE jobs • New operations jobs =3.3 M FTE jobs All monetary values are in 2006 dollars. Present value (PV) adjustments are made based on a discount rate of 7% Construction Phase = 1-2 years

  3. Jobs Supported by the 20% Scenario Over 500,000 jobs supported by the industry in 2030 Approx. 180,000 directly employed by wind Over 500,000 jobs would be supported between 2007 and 2030 National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation for Our Energy Future

  4. U.S. Training Needs • Assuming a 10% annual attrition rate this will require the training of the following new personnel annually • 5,000 construction, • 2,200 manufacturing, • 350 other construction sector jobs • 6,500 indirect positions per year, each of which will need a differing amount of wind specific education. • For the operation of new plant, the following will be required assuming 15GW of new capacity per year • 1,000 to 1,500 new plant operators • 3,500 to 4,500 new personal in induced markets, some requiring experience National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation for Our Energy Future

  5. Wind for Schools Project Objectives: Engage rural America in the concept that wind offers an alternative energy and economic future for rural America Engage rural school teachers and students in energy education, specifically wind Equip college juniors and seniors in wind energy applications and education to provide the growing U.S. wind industry with interested and equipped engineers With the schools – goes the community Long-term economic development in rural areas is tightly linked to schools. Getting 20% of our electrical energy from wind will require on the order of 10,000,000 FTE job years and a sea change in the publics understanding of the nations energy situation – we need to start training the people who will make this happen National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation for Our Energy Future
