Have students form a group based on the following. • Group yourselves according to Religion..ready go! • Group yourselves accordingly if you have a family history of alcoholism or not…ready go! • Group yourselves based upon your families medical history (ex/ heart disease, diabetes, cancer)..ready go!

  5. 1- Religious • Religions that prohibit the use of alcohol include: • Islam (Muslims) • Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) • Seventh-Day Adventist • Christian Science

  6. Alcohol-Free Countries (b/c of Religion) • Pakistan (Muslim) • Russia • Libya • India (certain areas allow alcohol) • Saudia Arabia & Kuwait • Qatar • Bangladesh • Sudan • The Maldives • Morocco • Tunisia (only allowed for tourists)

  7. 2- Health/ Medical • Personal / family history/ or alcohol dependence • Taking certain medications • Pregnancy- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome • Other Health reasons: • Liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer(s)

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) • Alcohol (wine, beer, liquor) is the leading known preventable cause of mental & physical birth defects in the United States. • Each year (in the U.S) 1 in every 750 infants is born with a pattern of physical, developmental, and functional problems related to FAS.

  9. 4- Family/ Cultural • Risk for developing alcoholism runs in families with the combination of GENETICS & ENVIRONMENT: FRIENDS + STRESS+ AVAILABILITY= INCREASED RISK

Do these statistics surprise you? • 14 million people in the U.S. (1 in 13 adults) abuse alcohol or are alcoholics. • More men than women are alcohol dependent or have alcohol problems. • The highest incidence of alcoholism is between the ages of 18-29. • The earlier a person starts using alcohol, the greater the likelihood they will develop alcohol problems at some point in their lives.

  11. Did you know? • 1/3 of the adult population abstains from alcohol in the U.S. • Women are more likely to abstain from alcohol than men are. • More adults in the U.S. abstain from alcohol than those in West Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and Canada.
