  2. 94 percentof doctors surveyed said their patients at least sometimes forget or lose track of potentially important things they are told during doctor visits.

  3. 34 percent of the doctors said they themselves at least sometimes forget or lose track of potentially important things that their patients tell them.

  4. Today, about 133 million Americans (nearly half of all adults) live with at least one chronic illness: diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, cancer or arthritis, and the numbers continue to rise.

  5. Under the current ICD-9 system there are only 17,000 codes available for identifying diagnoses and procedures. The ICD-10 in October 2013 will result in a total of 155,000 codes, allowing for the accommodation of diagnoses and procedures in a way that is not possible today.

  6. Just over 40 percent of the market indicated they have the capability to meet five or more of the menu items for meaningful use.

  7. A recent survey found that 80 percent of patients feel like they understand their discharge instructions, when in reality only 20 percent have fully understood what they need to do.

  8. More than half of PHR users have learned more about their health as a result of their PHR and one third of those say they used the PHR to take a specific action to improve their health.

  9. Medical literature is on track to grow from 18 million articles today to over 36 million articles – essentially doubling all the medical knowledge acquired across the history of man within the next 12-15 years.

  10. Hospitalizations account for nearly one-third of the $2 trillion spent on healthcare in the United States annually. Nearly 20% of these hospitalizations are re-hospitalizations occurring within 30 days of discharge.

  11. 74 percent of doctors said patients should be able to share their information electronically with their doctors and other practitioners.
