  4. OCW Background • 1999 - Provost Robert A. Brown asks for strategic guidance on positioning MIT in the DE environment • Recommendation resulted in OCW • Based on the conviction that“… the open dissemination of knowledge and information can open new doors to the powerful benefits of education for humanity around the world”

  5. OCW… • Provides free, searchable, access to MIT's course materials for educators, students, and self-learners around the world. • 1550 courses available as of 11/1/06

  6. OCW is NOT… • Is not a degree-granting or certificate-granting activity • Does not provide access to MIT faculty • Does not require any registration
