  1. Importance of Songs in Indian Wedding Ceremonies

  2. Introduction Music is a key form of emotional expression, and thereby it plays a prime role in most of the major occasions of a person’s life, including marriage. Music and songs form a significant part of the wedding ceremonies, especially in the culturally hybrid society like ours. Indian weddings that are held in the northern side of the country and abide by Hindu customs ideally last for five days and comprise of a number of rituals, each of them having certain kinds of songs associated with them.

  3. These musical pieces can be classical traditional tunes, energetic folk music, peppy Punjabi songs, or contemporary Bollywood hits. • Some of the major Indian wedding ceremonies and the songs associated with them have been mentioned in the following slides.

  4. Sangeet Ceremony In the Sangeet ceremony, the female members belonging to the bride’s family, along with other female friends and acquaintances come together. They ideally sing and dance to songs relating the future of the bride along with her spouse. This event plays a vital role in enhancing the festivities of the wedding functions and adding a unique energy to it.

  5. Mehendi Ceremony This is one of the most prominent pre-wedding ceremonies. In this event, the bride-to-be adorns her hands and even at times her legs with gorgeous and striking henna designs. This ceremony is largely a fun-filled event where the family members and the close friends of the bride and groom come together and dance to the tune of energetic folk or Punjabi songs.

  6. Baraat Procession This procession essentially marks the arrival of the groom at the venue of the wedding and is celebrated with great pomp and splendor. The family and friends of the groom, commonly referred to as the ‘baraati,’ accompany him on his way to the destination of the wedding, while ideally singing and dancing to the latest Bollywood hit songs.

  7. Source of the Songs While earlier these ceremonial songs were sung by women in the family, now that the events have become more extravagant, people either download these songs from popular music portals and play them on big music systems that they carry along at the event venue or hire professional artists who sing these songs throughout the functions.
