Review Perfect Tenses • Use for: • Completed action before another action in all tenses • I have washed my hands, now I can start cooking. • He had called before he left for his trip. • The work will have been completed by the time the school day is over. • Continued action before another action in all tenses • We have been at school since 5pm • Ha had studied all night before he fell asleep. • By tonight, I will have finished all my homework.

  5. Present Continuous • Present Form “to be” + present participle (VERBing) • is riding • am watching • are eating • Examples: • We are going to the mall. • She is doing her homework. • I am talking on the phone.

  6. When to Use • Happening now • They are reading their books. • Continuous action from past to present • She is studying to become a doctor. • Near future • We are going to Santa Marta for vacation. • Repetition • Those girls are always talking in class.

  7. Present VS Present Progressive • Every Monday, Sally ____ (drive) her kids to football practice. • Usually, I ___ (work) as a secretary, but this summer I ___ (study) French, which is why I am in Paris. • Shhhhh! Be quiet, John ___ (sleep). • Don’t forget to take your umbrella. It ___ (rain). • I hate living in Seattle because it always ___ (rain).

When to Use • Interrupted Action in the past • When the phone rang, she was writing a letter. • Specific Time as Interruption • I was eating dinner at 7pm. • Simultaneous Action in Past • I was studying, while he was making dinner. • Atmosphere • When I walked into the office, several people were busily typing, some were talking on the phones, the boss was yelling directions, and customers were waiting to be helped. • Repetition in the Past • She was always arriving late to work.

Future Progressive • “will be” + present participle (VERBing) • will be riding • will be watching • am/os/are + going to be + present participle • am going to be riding • are going to be listening • is going to be watching • Example: • You will be waiting for her when her plane arrives tonight. • Is he going to be picking her up when she arrives tonight? • They will not be seeing her until she arrives.

When to Use • Interrupted Action in the future • I will be sleeping when they arrive tonight. • Specific Time as Interruption • Tonight at 6pm I will be eating dinner. • Simultaneous Action in future • I am going to be working, while he is going to be driving home. • Atmosphere • When I arrive at the party, everyone is going to be dancing and laughing and having a good time.
