  1. We will work together to prepare every student for post-secondary education. Roseville High School Mission

  2. Common Core State Standards • The Common Core was initiated by State Governors and State School Officers who were responding to education and business leaders concerns that our high school students are not prepared to compete in a global economy. • Aligned with College AND Career-Readiness Standards • Define the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in 1st year academic college courses & workforce training programs

  3. Common Core State Standards • The new standards raise the bar…..the old standards required kids to memorize information….the new ones ask them to do something with that knowledge. • Our kids are competing in a global market where job requirements are constantly changing. We need to prepare kids for a world where access to information is easy but where solving problems, adapting strategies and communicating complex information are essential job skills.

  4. Common Core State Standards • We are not abandoning core curriculum….students are being asked to apply that knowledge rather than just remember it. Creativity, persistence, and collaboration are hallmarks of the new standards. • There is no loss of local control for us….. We have been working on college readiness for the past decade with impressive results. The new standards are the first State requirement we have seen in years that actually helps us in our mission. We welcome the common core. .

  9. AVID 9 The freshman AVID course focuses on improving the foundational learning skills necessary for a college preparatory curriculum while helping students become part of the life of Roseville High School. Writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading skills are developed along with binder organization, note-taking, time management, and goal setting. Collaborative tutorial sessions supported by college student tutors are held for half of the period on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students to gain a greater understanding of material in their content area classes.

  10. Freshman Seminar Freshmen Seminar supports college preparatory students in their transition to high school by introducing and reinforcing skills necessary for success in rigorous curriculum. Students regularly practice critical reading and writing skills, academic vocabulary, study skills, goal setting, and questioning techniques. The course also introduces test test-taking strategies, reinforces math skills, identifies learning styles, and helps students establish organizational habits. Twice per week, a college preparatory seminar supports students in their academic classes. The course culminates in a project that utilizes online resources and technical applications to explore careers and post-secondary educational options.

  11. Pre-AP English 9 w/Geography & World Cultures This pre-AP course provides a foundation to prepare university-bound students for the rigors of future honors and AP courses. Students will engage in higher order thinking, reading and writing skills while exploring the unique characteristics of selected world regions from a geographic and literary perspective. This integrated course will utilize 21st century technologies and emphasize the depth and complexity of writing.

  12. Positive Power This class has been designed to help students be a successful at RHS by providing daily support and guidance through the use of RHS student tutors, AVID methodologies, and other personal development activities. Students that participate in this class tend to improve their grades in all of their classes by working with a trained student-tutor and small study groups to complete and understand the course work assigned in their academic classes. Students will also work with counselors on a monthly basis. This class is recommended for students that tend to struggle in their classes and have a difficult time keeping up with their peers.
