    7. 7 So, what is Information Governance? IG is a framework that brings together all the requirements, standards and best practice that apply to the handling of information to ensure: - compliance with the law - implementation of government guidance - monitoring and improvement It is designed to assist with the application of rules concerning confidentiality, privacy, data security, consent, disclosure and access to records To enable us to manage the information assets of the authority where ever they, what ever they are and in what ever Directorate – applies to us all!!! Compliance with the law i.e. Data Protection - Freedom of Information - Human Rights – Common Law duty of Confidence Implementation of Government guidance – Lots of it ! Information Security Management BS 7799 Monitoring and improvement – IG Toolkit for Local Authorities – scoring on DP & FOI & Security etc but will not have a full impact unless it becomes part of ie CPA which forms part of our star ratingTo enable us to manage the information assets of the authority where ever they, what ever they are and in what ever Directorate – applies to us all!!!     10. 10 Why do we need Information Governance? Successful partnership working depends on effective communication, but the information exchanges need to be managed because… …we are expected to share information - but we also have to protect people’s privacy, uphold their rights, prevent data misuse, and remain within the law We need to ensure our staff are supported and clear about their responsibilities and boundaries We need to ensure the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of the information we produce or receive

    11. 11 What are the benefits of sharing information? Proactive and preventative intervention is enabled – We all know that after a major event we all start saying this wouldn’t have happened if we shared information to we need to be proactive ie The ‘NEET’ strategy - Not in Education, Employment or Training 16 – 18 kids that just fool through the net one or more of us may know of them but not one single agency holds all the keys to reducing NEET, Local Authorities, schools, learning skills council, youth support services and employers all have a key role to play.
