  8. Unattended Installation • An unattended installation does not require constant user involvement during the installation process. • The installation can be initiated by pre-configuring an answer file called unattend.txt. by Rashid Khan

  9. Unattended Installation Unattended installations are beneficial: • When the operating system is to be installed on several similar servers. • For deploying a large number of client operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional. • This method WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED HERE. There is No NEED to install many copies of Server by Rashid Khan

  10. Other Installation Options • Network installation • Imaged installation by Rashid Khan

  11. Network Installation For installing Windows Server 2003 on computers connected to an existing network: • Copy the \I386 directory from the installation CD to a shared folder on the network. • Copy files, such as answer files and device drivers, to the same folder. • Map the folder to a drive letter on the machine where the operating system is to be installed. by Rashid Khan

  12. Imaged Installation • Imaged installation is useful when Windows Server 2003 needs to be set up on several identical computers. • Disk image is used to perform imaged installations. by Rashid Khan

  13. Make Pre-Installation Decisions • Question? • Upgrade or clean installation • Partitioning • File system • Licensing • Server name • Initial password • Network settings by Rashid Khan

  14. Upgrade or Clean Installation Clean installation: • Refers to installing the operating system on a computer hard drive that does not contain any prior operating system or data. • Eliminates any chance of incompatibilities with older software. • Provides the new operating system maximum control over certain aspects of hardware configuration. by Rashid Khan

  15. Upgrade or Clean Installation Upgrade installation: • New operating system replaces the existing operating system. • Existing configuration settings and installed applications, and data are preserved. • It does not support downgrades. by Rashid Khan

  16. Partitioning • A hard drive partition is a discrete portion of the hard drive. • The partition is used as a structure for organizing data on the drive. by Rashid Khan

  17. File System • File system organizes the partition and tracks the location of files on the drive. • The basic file systems are FAT and NTFS. by Rashid Khan

  18. Licensing The two licensing modes for Windows Server 2003 are: • Per-Server licensing. • Per-Device or Per User licensing. by Rashid Khan

  19. Per-Server Licensing • Per-Server licensing is based on the total number of concurrent connections to a particular server. • It is ideal for small networks. by Rashid Khan

  20. Per-Device or Per-User Licensing • Per Device licensing requires a license for every connection to the server. • There is no limit on simultaneous connections. • It is ideal for large networks where client devices connect to more than one server. by Rashid Khan

  21. Server Name • The server name must be unique. • It can contain a maximum of 63 characters. • It can have upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. by Rashid Khan

  22. Initial Password • Passwords are required to keep the system secure. • They must be changed frequently. • Passwords must not be reused. by Rashid Khan

  23. Network Settings The Windows Server 2003 installation program offers two types of network settings: • Typical settings – Configure the server to use the TCP/IP protocol suite and obtain the correct IP address automatically. • Custom settings – Allow users to select and configure the required networking protocols and services. by Rashid Khan

  24. Install and Activate Windows Server 2003 • Perform an attended installation. • Test the installation. by Rashid Khan
