  2. Waste Management in PDO • Introduction • Categories of waste • Types of Wastes • Sources of wastes • Consignment Notes / Waste Routes • Treatment / Disposal of Wastes • Conclusions • Way Forward

  3. Introduction • PDO’s philosophy, practice and procedures for waste management place emphasis on the prevention of waste generation, followed by 3R • Reuse, • Recycle and • Recover.

  4. Waste Management Objectives • Wastes shall be managed in order to; • reduce their potential to cause harm to • health or • environment, and • reduce operating costs • avoid future liabilities.

  5. Waste Management Hierarchy • Pollution prevention – elimination, change or reduction of operating practices which result in wastes. • Source reduction – generation of less wastes through more efficient processes • Re-use – the use of materials or products that are reusable in their original from. • Recycling/recovery – the conversion of wastes into usable materials, or the extraction of energy or materials from wastes. • Treatment – the destruction, detoxification and/or neutralisation of residues. • Responsible disposal – depositing wastes using methods appropriate for a given situation.

  6. Categories of wastes • The main types of wastes arising from our operations are : • non-hazardous wastes • hazardous wastes • In PDO, we aim to control and minimize waste generated thus reducing environmental impact.

  7. Non Hazardous Waste (MD 17/93) Any solid material or semi solid which does not have any danger to the environment or to the human health if it is dealt with in a scientific way Hazardous Waste (MD 18/93) Any liquid or solid waste which because of its quantity, physical, chemical or infectious characteristics can result in hazards to human health or the environment when improperly handled, stored, transported, treated or disposed of.

  8. Types Of Waste Non -Hazardous Kitchen refuse Domestic waste Tree cuttings Office waste Non-hazardous waste chemicals Non hazardous empty drums Scrap metal WBM & WBMC Others Hazardous Oily sand / soil Batteries Oily Sludge Clinical waste Waste lubricants OBM & OBMC Pigging sludge Sewage sludge Hazardous waste chemicals NORM Hazardous empty drums Tyres Hazardous Lab waste chemicals Others

  10. Waste Consignment Notes(WCN) should accompany all types of waste transported The WCN is the documentary evidence which is used to demonstrate that the waste has been managed in a responsible manner
