  1. Ui-View An Introduction

  2. Features • UI-View is an APRS application for Windows. It differs from most APRS software in that it isn't designed just to be used with TNCs in terminal mode. It also supports TNCs in KISS mode, AGWPE host mode. The host mode support means that UI-View can be used with an extremely wide range of packet hardware and allows up to 16 RF ports to be used. • UI-View has a full-featured internal intelligent digipeater. • UI-View has full support for connecting to APRS servers on the internet. • UI-View uses bitmap images for its maps. Also, the 32 bit version has full support for Undertow Software's Precision Mapping CD atlas, allowing you to zoom to street level anywhere in the USA. • UI-View has an open architecture. It is designed to make it easy for other software authors to write add-on applications that provide additional functionality.

  3. Basic configurations • Internet only. • Ui-view can be used in an internet only mode. In this role • Display only. • Wx Tx/Rx. • Msg. Tx/Rx. • Soundcard. • Full APRS.(Messaging, Relay, Wx, Posit.) • Stationary with internet to extend functions.(Igate) • Tnc. • Same as soundcard but at added cost.

  4. Home station Internet Soundcard TNC Mobile station Soundcard TNC Suitability to task

  5. Setup and Configuration • System requirements. • Configuration for TNC. • Configuration for Soundcard. • Configuration of Ui-view to use AGWPE. • Configuration of Station Position and parameters. • Configuration for internet. • Selection of map.

  6. System requirements • A 32 bit version of Windows - Win95, Win98, Win2000, etc. • A P120 or greater. If you run it on anything less than that, then it will be excruciatingly slow.) • 32MB of memory(Ui-view alone), 128MB recommended. • Internet connection(optional.) • Tnc and radio. • Weather station.

  7. Configuration for TNC • Connect all hardware • Start Ui-view and open the “setup > comms setup” menu. • It is on the menu that hardware communications will be configured.

  8. Host modes • Host mode NONE • If no host mode is selected, then UI-View32 needs its own TNC. The TNC should be in terminal mode, and you must configure the other comms options to match the settings of your TNC. • When UI-View32 starts, the settings in the [INIT_COMMANDS] section of the selected command file will be sent to the TNC. You should select the most suitable command file for your TNC, and the Edit button allows you to edit the commands. • The TNC must have monitor on and the monitor mode must include information on the frame type in the frame header. • When UI-View32 closes, the settings in the [EXIT_COMMANDS] section of the selected command file are sent to the TNC.(this is only true if you click exit from the file menu.) • Host mode KISS • If you select KISS mode, then, besides configuring the TNC comms settings you must also click the 'Setup' button and configure the TNC KISS options. Note that in KISS mode handshaking will always be set to NONE. • Host Mode AGWPE • To use this mode, you must be running the SV2AGW Packet Engine. One you have selected AGWPE, you can click the Setup button and configure the TCP/IP connection. For a connection to AGWPE on your own PC, the default settings should be correct.

  9. Tnc Type • Choose the configuration file that most closely matches your tnc. • After you choose the file you may edit the commands sent to the tnc. (most likely this will not be needed.) • Check that all the settings are correct and click ok. • At this point you need to close Ui-view and restart it.

  10. Configuration of Station Position and parameters • Setup>Station setup is where your callsign, Lat., Lon., path, interval, and symbol. • The format is dd.mm.nnN/S. Notice this is in decimal min. not seconds. The N/S is for north or south. You may also set the lat./lon. by holding down the HOME key and double clicking on the map. • You must enter a valid lat/lon or your beacon will be disabled. • Port must be 1 for tnc operation. Maybe set to something different if using AGWPE. • Path. • Interval. • Symbol. • Compress beacon.

  11. GPS and Weather setup • Setup>GPS setup is where you can set UI-View to operate as a mobile tracker. • Com Port./Port sharing/Output. • GPS data format. • Setup>Weather setup is where you can set UI-View to send weather data via APRS. • Most settings can be copied from station setup(callsign, beacon, port, interval, and path.) • You use the Browse button to set the path to the APRS WX file your station saves.

  12. Internet setup • Setup>APRS server setup is where you configure for internet access. • When you first install Ui-view there is a very limited set of servers to choose from. • From File>Download APRS server list you can update the list with the most recent changes as well as additions. • Choose the server that meets your needs. • Activate the features you need. • Enter you Validation number.

  13. Maps • When installed, Ui-view will not have local maps for you to use. • To have local mapping you must supply a suitable image. There are several way to do this. • SA virtual map. It makes it very easy to grab maps from Street Atlas V4, V5, V6, V7, V8 and V9 • Precision mapping. • Ui-terra allows you to make maps from Terraserver. • UI-Point32 uses MapPoint 2002. • UI-Route, written by Andy M0CYP,will plot APRS station icons on the following mapping programs • Route Master 2000 (UK) • AutoStreet 2000 (UK) • AutoRoute - various versions • Street Finder • Streets & Trips • Kartex (Swedish) • MapSource Italy • MapSource France • Garmin UK • MapPoint Europe 2002

  14. Operation of UI-view • Having configured Ui-view it is now ready for service. • Whether it WX, display only, or full TX/RX/internet. Ui-view is more than capable. • With a little additional setup it can even be configured to act as a digi to relay packets. • With plug-ins, Ui-view can receive NWS warnings and plot them on the map. Others allow you to keep a database of tracked stations over a time period and then see where that station was at a given time. • Ui-view can really shine in the emergency or event communications role.

  15. Event operation • Ui-view has several features that enable it to be used in event communications. • Exclude/include lists. Here you can choose to exclude everything except mobile stations. This greatly removes clutter from the map. This list can be configured on Setup>exclude/include lists. • Tactical calls. With the Setup>edit translations, you can assign labels to call signs. Here I have kc5cpo-9 labeled as Dave. This is great for events. You label the start/finish/sag/stop1. • With a plug-in, you can draw an object on the map and transmit it over APRS. This is great for race route. • Messaging is also an asset.
