  9. Counselor/Student Meeting January- February Mrs. Ko will meet individually with each student and family to discuss their high school course choices and select electives.

  10. Course Offerings College Prep B College Prep A Advanced (Music only) Honors Please refer to the THS Program of Studies on the THS Website

  11. Course Level Recommendations Based on the following criteria: • Grade for the Course in the first two marking periods of 8th grade • Teacher Recommendation • NJ ASK

  12. Honors Criteria Physical Science and Biology Honors A- in Earth Science plus A- in Algebra 1GeometryA- Algebra 1 or Advanced Algebra World History East B+ AND teacher rec. EnglishSelf-Select World Languages A AND teacher recommendation MusicA in course, teacher recommendation, AND an audition

  13. Double Science A- in Earth Science in the first two marking periods of 8th grade AND A- in Algebra 1 Honors Criteria

  14. Geometry Honors A- for the year in 7th grade Algebra OR A- for the first two marking periods in 8th grade Algebra (if this is the first time taking Algebra) OR A- for the first two marking periods of Advanced Algebra.  Plus teacher recommendation which includes consideration of the NJASK 7 in both math and language arts.   15. World History East Honors B+ first two marking periods AND Teacher Recommendations Honors Criteria

  16. English Students communicate their desired course level to their 8th grade Language Arts teacher. Teacher will advise student based upon current skill level and performance. Sometimesa follow-up interview is held with Mr. Brian Ross, English Supervisor, to assist in the advisement process. Honors Criteria Honors Criteria

  17. World Language The Teacher’s recommendation is a crucial component in addition to the grade of an “A” since students go from a heterogeneous grouping to a homogeneous grouping at THS and the oral proficiency is key to succeeding in Honors. Honors Criteria

  18. Advanced Band • Teacher Recommendation AND • Audition • Mr. Stanek conducts auditions one afternoon at THS in February or March. Results are shared with the Guidance Counselor who shares with the student Honors Criteria Appeals Process

  19. Advanced Orchestra and Chorus Mr. Millar visits 8th grade music classes and explains the audition requirements which are also posted on his web pages. A few weeks later, he sets up audition times at TMS to hear the students who wish to audition. Results are shared with the Guidance Counselor who shares with the student. Appeals Process

  20. Appeals Process February-March 2015 Course level recommendations may be appealed, in writing to the Content Supervisor, whose decision in turn can be appealed to the High School Vice Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Board of Education.

  21. Balance • Time Management • Self-Advocacy Skills – speak with classroom teachers especially regarding high school recommendations • Well Rounded Student – extra curricular activities, studies, sports and volunteerism • Studentship skills Avoid Overload
