  1. Sample Environment Plans and Progress September 2004 HYSPEC Meeting Lou Santodonato SNS Sample Environment Team Leader

  2. Sample Environment Timeline

  3. Establishing Priorities • User-community dialog • Facilitated by the Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences (JINS) • “SENSE” and other workshops • SHUG, SNS User Administrator, Instrument Scientists, IDT& IAT • Experimental Facilities Advisory Committee • User-driven priorities • Ample support staff • Versatile mix of “standard” and “special” equipment • R&D: engage instrument scientists, user-collaborations Ongoing efforts in all of these areas!

  4. Highlights 2003 • Vital Collaborations Formed • SBIR award Fast Exchange Refrigerator for Neutron Science • Interdivision ORNL efforts with HFIR, CNMS & HTML • Magnet initiatives • Standards Adopted • Mechanical interface • Data acquisition scheme • Strategic Purchasing • Laboratory tools, pumps, leak detector, etc. • Workhorse environments: cryofurnace & CCRs

  5. Highlights 2004 • New SNS equipment tested and commissioned for user experiments • Collaboration with the HFIR technical and scientific staff • Part of larger benchmarking initiative • Making measurable improvements in performance • FERNS prototype • Testing and demo at ORNL • Phase-II proposal awarded

  6. Long-Range Vision • Continue to build strong collaborations for developing special environments and advanced capabilities • Internal efforts will focus on establishing world-class user support • Team building • Instrument Systems technical staff expansion already underway • New staff will learn and contribute to pre-operations sample environment activities • Operations plan • Sample Environment Team will grow dramatically • Team will conduct parallel activities: user-support, maintenance, R&D • Develop best-in-class equipment inventory • Learn from ongoing prototyping and benchmarking initiatives • Prepare for bulk purchasing of standard systems beginning in 2005 • Continually refine “bottoms-up” inventory projection • Engage instrument scientists in R&D and upgrade initiatives
