  3. Adjectives • A word or words that are used to modify a noun or a pronoun • Modify= to describe a word or make its meaning more definite. • Adjectives modify a noun or pronoun by answering the following 3 questions • What kind? • Which one? • How many? • What kind? gray skies Irish lace far-fetched tale lowest price • Which one? either way those girls next day last chance • How many? five fingers fewer hours one river some problems

  4. Demonstrative Adjectives • This, that, these, those can be used as an adjective or a pronoun (like we learned last week). It depends on how these words are used that determines what part of speech they are. • Demonstrative Adjective is when these words modify a noun or a pronoun • Did Carley draw this picture or that one? • Let’s take these sandwiches and those apples on our picnic • Demonstrative Pronouns take the place of a noun or a pronoun • This is mine and that is his. • These are much more expensive than those are.

  5. Pronoun or Adjective? Words other than the Demonstrative Pronouns/Adjectives can serve as either a pronoun or an adjective, depending on the circumstances. • I like that. • Which one is yours? • Either will do. • Whose is it? • Whose hat is it? • Which is yours? • Either car will do. • I like that shirt

  6. Noun or Adjective? • Words that are typically nouns can also function as adjectives. • cheese cheese sandwich • snow snow sculpture • winter winter sale • weather weather report • steel steel girder • This is also true for some proper nouns • Choctaw Choctaw tradition • Texas Texas coast • Picasso Picasso painting • Dublin Dublin streets • Roosevelt Roosevelt administration

  7. Articles • These are the most frequently used adjectives (a, an, the) and they are known as articles. • “a” and “an” are known as indefinite articles because they don’t specify a definite member of a group. • a student (could be any student) • “a” is used in front of words with a consonant sound. • a hammer • “an” is used in front of words with a vowel sound. • an acrobat, an honor • “the” is the definite article. It singles out a specific member. • the teacher (it is the one teacher to which you are referring)

  8. Examples Mr. Cline tells all students that good workers will be given special privileges. A sweating, exhausted runner crossed the line. A dog, old and overweight, snored in the sun. Merrilee was worried. She felt nervous about the play. Cheered by the crowd, the band played an encore.
