  2. Manuel Mier Y Teran General of the Mexican Army. Expressed concern about the Anglo colonists outnumbering the Mexican settlers. Noticed the influence of the United States was growing in Texas. Realized many settlers ignored laws against trading. Wrote a report that made it clear Mexico must gain control of Texas.

  3. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna • Led the Mexican Army attack on the Alamo. • He and his men successfully defeated the Texan Army at the Alamo. • At San Jacinto, they where were defeated in about 20 minutes. • Santa Anna was captured at the Battle of San Jacinto. • Was forced to sign two treaties to end the Texas Revolution and made Texas independent from Mexico.

  4. Lorenzo de Zavala Helped write the Mexican Constitution of 1824. Remained a loyal Mexican Citizen until Santa Anna became a dictator. Fled to Texas and fought for the Texas cause to be independent. During the revolution was interim Vice-President for Texas. After the Battle of San Jacinto he turned his house into a hospital to help the wounded troops.

Stephen f. austin • Known as the Father of Texas. • Empresario who brought the first 300 Anglo families to Texas to settle. • Supported Texas during the Texas Revolution. • Commanded Texan forces at the Siege of San Antonio de Bexar. • Ran for President of the Republic of Texas, but lost to Sam Houston. • Served as the first Secretary of State for the Republic.

  6. Sam Houston Was the leader of the Texan Army in. At the Battle of San Jacinto he defeated Santa Anna’s Army- forcing Santa Anna to surrender. Was known as the “man of density” because he captured Santa Anna. Served as the first President of the Republic of Texas.

James Fannin • Command of Texan soldiers near Goliad. • He hesitated to abandon his post at Goliad in order to join troops at the Alamo. • By the time he decided to attempt to help at the Alamo, it was too late. • Fannin and his troops were defeated and imprisoned at Goliad. • Most soldiers thought they would be set free but instead were massacred outside of the Mission at Goliad.

  8. William B. Travis Was lawyer before he served during the Texas Revolution. Recruited 29 men and led them to defend the Alamo. Was a Lieutenant Colonel at the Battle of the Alamo. Wrote an inspirational letter to Texans begging for help at the Alamo. He died at the Battle of the Alamo.

  9. James (Jim) Bowie • Inventor of the Bowie knife. • He helped fight in the Battle of Nacogdoches and Battle of Concepcion. • Colonel for Texas in the Battle of the Alamo. • His soldiers were volunteers. • Became ill during the Battle of the Alamo, but still fought from his bed with a pistol.

  10. David (Davy) Crockett He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives. A former volunteer colonel and member of the Texas Congress. Arrived at the Battle of the Alamo with about a dozen (12) Tennessean men. His group was among the last to survive at the Battle of the Alamo, but he died in the end.

Juan Seguin • Even though he was of Mexican heritage, he fought with the Texans to help them earn their independence from Mexico • Was the messenger who carried Travis’ famous letter to Goliad, Gonzales, and other locations asking for help at the Alamo. • He and his men fought at the Battle of San Jacinto with Sam Houston. • Later he served as the only Mexican Texan in the Senate of the Republicand as a Mayor of San Antonio

  12. George Childress • Former newspaper editor. • Part of the committee formed to write the Texas Declaration of Independence. • The Declaration was modeled after the United States Declaration of Independence.
