  2. BIG IDEA!!!! • Muslims scholars researched the works of earlier cultures and used older knowledge to build new understandings • They “stood on the shoulders of giants”

  3. House of Wisdom • Abbasid center for learning and scholarship in Baghdad • Works translated • New ideas developed

  4.   5. Astronomy • al-Buruni • Figured out how to find the direction to Mecca from anywhere on earth • Omar Khayyam • The great poet read al-Khwarizmi’s works and the works of the ancient Greeks • Used this knowledge to create accurate calendars http://www.mhs.ox.ac.uk/scienceislam/index.php

  6. Astrolabe! • Ancient instrument used by Muslim scientists to measure stars in the sky

Medicine • HOSPITALS • Muslims doctors • Read ancient books (Roman, Greek, etc.) on medicine • Combined the ancient knowledge with new ideas and understandings • IbnSina (called Avicenna in Europe) • Wrote Canon of Medicine around 1000 AD • Described all known medical knowledge • Remained the most important medical book in Europe and in the Middle East for 600 years • Al-Razi (called Rhazes in Europe) • Persian born doctor, read old studies to help identify and describe diseases like smallpox http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/islam/science/medicine/
