Dwight Armstrong • Former FFA member and Kentucky State Officer • Professor North Carolina State University 1975-82 • Former COO for Akey, Inc. 1982-2000 • Former COO for North American Nutrition Companies, Inc 2000-08 • Founder and Principal at JDA Consulting, LLC 2008-09 • Served as chair of the National FFA Foundation Sponsors’ Board

Affiliation Fee Option Reason for Providing the Option • Provide all students the opportunity to be engaged in leadership through agricultural education • Save teachers valuable class time • Align with NQPS • To make FFA an integral component of agricultural education for every student, every class, every day

  6. How does it work? • Every student taking agricultural education is considered a member of FFA and is included on the roster. One fee for the entire Chapter • No FFA dues should be collected from students – alternative sources • Both state and national FFA have an affiliation Fee plan in place in states participating

CDE Revision Timeline August 2010 Revision summary presented to EMC for review March 2011 State staff inservice on revisions at Ag Ed Summit April 2011 Train the Trainer program one representative per state, Indianapolis May – August 2011 LPS and CARE staff participate in state level meeting and inservice August 2011 Updated rules, formats and applications released via www.ffa.org October 2012 Award programs conducted at convention following revised rules and formats. Applications submitted in spring of 2012 will follow revised rules and formats.

The goal of the Million Hour Challenge is for FFA chapters to collectively reach 1 million hours by completing service projects in one or all of the five service categories: Education, Environment, Government, Social/Human Services and Healthy Lifestyles.   13. Taja of Urban Farming is providing an education segment to Mayor Franklin and Creekside High School FFA members. (GA, April 21, 2009) Changing Young Lives & A Community’s Future through Care and Agriculture PALS and Campbell Soup have made grants available for community gardens for up to $2,000 each! The deadline for applying is August 2, 2010. Contact the PALS office at 317-802-4413 or pals@ffa.org for more information.

Middle School Food and Agriculture Literacy Curriculum • National FFA and the National Pork Board have teamed-up to create a new middle school curriculum • It is intended to be an entire year’s worth of material. • Focusing on all agriculture pathways, math, science and literacy and agriculture awareness • Coming this fall!

  15. Core Catalog Update • National Career Development Events Questions & Answers 2009– NOW Available • 2010-2011 Official FFA Manual available • New Official FFA Handbooks available spring 2011

  19. AgScience Ambassador Program • Chestertown, Md • July 11-16, 2010 • Three from the 13 western states accepted Wyoming---Colorado---Oregon Will transition to NAAE after this summer class

National AgScience Integration Institute • Agriscience Teacher Ambassador(s), a Teacher Educator, and a State Staff person • 10-12 state teams • Johnston, Iowa, on the campus of Pioneer Hybrid, International, June 27- July 1, 2010.  • Cutting edge approach to integrating Agriscience and Inquiry-based instruction • Applications due April 2…selection by April 16. • Washington participated last year • Arizona this year • Transition to NAAE after this institute

Status of CASE • Developing four program of study pathways for AFNR • Three courses released nationally: • Principles of Agricultural Science – Animal • Principles of Agricultural Science – Plant • Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (Field test 2010-2011) • Developing end of course assessments

Benefits of CASE • Increase rigor and relevance of student learning for AFNR content and core academics • Inquiry-based instruction • Engages students as instruction is provide using activities, projects, and problems • Student directed lessons – not teacher directed • National standards alignment Learn how to implement CASE in your program at www.case4learning.org

  26. FFA Collegiate Agricultural Experience in Zambia • Howard G. Buffett Foundation. • July 28 – August 20, 2010 • 6 College enrolled FFA Members • 2 day orientation in D.C., 2 weeks in Zambia, and 2 day debrief in D.C. • deadline for applications is May 1 • Collegiate Programs page of www.ffa.org.

  27. National Convention • 2010 National FFA Band, Chorus and Talent “on line” applications will be available April 15. • Deadline for application July 1.
