  1. Tips for Best Care for Stroke Patients at Home There is a reason why stroke patients are called stroke survivors. Post- stroke, from the day one they know that their fight has started. They know that they have to make their way to normal life and it is going to be difficult! When the hospital stay is finally over, the survivor has only won the battle and the war is due. Stroke is a complicated health issue and it causes various health complications along the way, directly and indirectly. It is a long way for cure and the moments of despair, discouragement and disheartening are, for sure, expected! There can be moments that need motivation and there can be times that need commitment. Amidst all this, all that a stroke patient needs is a hand that assures and supports throughout the way. Medicines and therapies can be helpful but they are empowered with healing only when a caring hand is added. As this caring hand, often, comes from a family member, it is essential for the caregiver to educate himself/herself more about how to care for a stroke patient. Continue reading to understand the kind of care they need. Starting from the assistance in basic daily activities to helping them perform advanced exercises that are part of therapy, here are the ways you can help them.

  2. ● Keep the survivor motivated - Post stroke recovery is all about how motivated and involved the survivor is in the process of therapy or stroke rehabilitation. Stroke patients go through a lot every day and they may take some time to accept their post-stroke physical condition. Being considerate of their physical and emotional status is imperative and this something only a family member can offer. If there is one aspect in which the home care for stroke outshines the clinical care that is the emotional support from the family members. It keeps them motivated and helps them be involved fully in the therapy sessions. ● Maintain a recovery diary - The road for recovery for stroke can be long and it is important to keep a tracker so that you are not lost. Keeping a daily tracker and updating it helps the caregiver to understand the progress, the speed of recovery, new complications and cure as a whole. This diary can be a tracker and reference for the caregiver and the survivor by letting them know where they stand on the road to recovery. The caregiver can explain the condition to the therapist and be mindful of the new or repetitive complications which are common after a stroke. ● Prevention of recurrence by knowing stroke better - The biggest concern about stroke is its occurrence. According to American Family Physician stats, around 25% of stroke survivors experience stroke recurrence in the early stages of recovery after the initial one. Also, development of new side effects of stroke is more common in the initial 2 or 3 weeks after the 1st stroke. Read more about it, attend rehabilitation awareness programs and community medical awareness sessions to be aware of the symptoms of new side effects and preventive measures of stroke recurrence.

  3. Educate yourself about stroke but ensure that it is not influencing the prescribed treatment and therapy methods. ● Don't get discouraged by slow progress - Stroke recovery varies person to person and do not compare recovery with other patients. Based on the area of the stroke in the brain, the person may experience memory, speech, movement, and vision related issues. Right after around 3 months from the stroke, the survivor may stop showing any progress and in fact you may feel the recovery is reversed. This is just a plateau experience and not a sign of stopped recovery. Stroke medications involve mood swings and even cause depression. It is essential that the survivor is expressing what they feel and they are feeling comfortable while doing so. Talk to the person often and probe them about how they feel. Conclusion - There will be many questions for both the stroke survivor and for the family members after a stroke. The challenges triggered by stroke are difficult and the survivors need immense help in order to get back to their feet. Take help from your trusted rehabilitation center for stroke. The advanced rehabilitation therapy clinics, these days, are providing in-home care and make use of them to see the horizons of recovery of your loved one sooner than you have expected.
