  1. Long Term Operation: Status of EPRI Project John Gaertner EPRI Technical Executive October 2009

  2. Long Term Operations (LTO) Project Objectives • Provide technology for continued operation of the current nuclear plants worldwide at high performance levels through 2030 and beyond • Includes technical basis for “Life beyond 60” • Be responsive to societal concerns of global warming, energy security safety, cost of energy • Collaboratewithother organizations includingDOE LWR Sustainability (LWRS) Program

  3. Criteria for LTO Activities Technical basis for license renewal and life extension • Identify and quantify potential “life limiting” issues • Aging management and life-cycle management • Opportunities for modernization and uprates • Enabling technology (e.g., analysis methods) Results by 2014 - 2019 support decisions For operation to 60 years and beyond

  4. 2009 Projects Materials Aging • Primary metal corrosion • characterize and model IGSCC in Ni-alloys • characterize, model, mitigate IASCC of stainless steel • RPV steels – effects of high flux and fluence (DOE effort -- no 2009 EPRI funding) • Concrete performance in LWRs and methods to evaluate issues Nuclear Fuel • SiC cladding • Advanced fuel modeling in FALCON to support SiC fuel issues Safety Analysis • Safety assessment and PRA tools gap analysis I&C and Information Technology (IT) • Online monitoring guidelines, diagnostic tools, and pilot applications • Advanced I&C, human interface, and information technology capabilities

  5. Integration with License Renewal and Life Extension Processes ISSUE TRACKING TABLE (ITT) • NEI conducts periodic R&D coordination meetings with EPRI, DOE, INL, NRC,… • NEI Life Beyond 60 Task Force to advise LR process • EPRI to maintain LTO Issue Tracking Table (ITT) on behalf of all stakeholders. ITT answers the questions: Do we know all the issues? Do we understand the issues? Are we working on the right stuff?

  6. Candidate 2010 New Activities • Support for plant refurbishments and up-rates • Remaining useful life (RUL) predictions for buried piping • Extension of Materials Degradation Matrix for primary metals to include failure mechanisms to 80 years • Characterizing potential life-limiting issues based on current practices. Who affected? When affected? • 3D plant modeling and simulation to support outage management and configuration management • Under-water welding for reactor internals repair and replacement • Advanced cable testing technology to predict RUL and perform life cycle management of cables.
