ICT-PSP Call 4 Digital Libraries InfoDay, Luxembourg, 4 Feburary 2010: Slide 2 Theme 2: Digital Libraries Theme 2 supports • Digital libraries initiative, aiming to improve accessibility, use and preservationof Europe's cultural heritage online • Experiments with open access to scientific information, exploring new paradigms for access and use • Total available funding 30 M€ • Six objectives All proposals must align with relevant policies, strategies and activities at European and national level

  8. 2.1: Coordinating Europeana Funding instrument One single Thematic Network based on actual cost(1) At least 7 independent legal entities from 7 different MS or associated countries up to 9 M€ of EU contribution for the period 2011-2013 (1) Art. 5 para. 4 of the Model Grant Agreement

ICT-PSP Call 4 Digital Libraries InfoDay, Luxembourg, 4 Feburary 2010: Slide 10 Why TN – actual cost - for objective 2.1? • Bring together relevant stakeholders, expertise and facilities to enhance & develop Europeana • Coordinate ongoing activities and network of contributing organisations to ingest content from funded (eCp and ICT PSP) projects as well as the release of major new versions of the service. • Network larger number of contributors from outside founding partnership. • N.B. The Community financial contribution shall not finance entire costs of project • limited to the additional costs of coordinating and implementing TN • Eligible direct costs for beneficiaries other than coordinator limited to travel and subsistence as well as personnel costs incurred for elaboration of deliverables

ICT-PSP Call 4 Digital Libraries InfoDay, Luxembourg, 4 Feburary 2010: Slide 12 2.2: Enhancing/aggregating content in Europeana • Aggregate existing digital cultural content held by cultural institutions to make it accessible and/or enhance searchability of content already available through Europeana • Align metadata and mappings with the specifications of Europeana • Improve interoperability between content management systems of individual content providers and Europeana platform Material should be selected through thematic approach and of interest to a broad public, not just to a limited set of specialists; selection criteria must be clear

To whom? • How will metadata be mapped to align with Europeana specifications? • How are IPR issues being addressed? • Will the project results be accessible and retrievable through Europeana at item level? • How will you ensure availability of the content after the end of the project?

ICT-PSP Call 4 Digital Libraries InfoDay, Luxembourg, 4 Feburary 2010: Slide 14 Why BPN for objective 2.2? • Make European digital libraries more accessible and usable by aggregating existing digital cultural content held by cultural institutions to make it accessible and/or enhance searchability of content already available through Europeana in real-life context • Align metadata and mappings with the specifications of Europeana on a sufficient mass of content • Improve interoperability between content management systems of individual content providers and Europeana platform • Commission may organise "clustering meetings" for different BPNs, inviting all relevant stakeholders in order to achieve broad consensus and create the conditions for the widest possible uptake

  15. 2.3: Digitising content for Europeana Funding instrument Several Pilots Type B Typical EU contribution: 2-3 M€ At least 4 independent legal entities from 4 different MS or associated countries Funding rate: 50% of direct and indirect costs (calculated as 30% flat rate of personnel costs)
