  1. library.dkIntegration of National and Local library services ELAG Rome 18 April 2002 Leif Andresen Danish National Library Authority

  2. bibliotek.dk/library.dk Objectives of bibliotek.dk: • Public access via web-interface • Give the user the option to request • Open quickly • No new technical or political requirements to the local libraries library.dk - ELAG 2002

  3. Background • A common National Union Catalogue called DanBib including holdings of the public and research libraries in Denmark • Each library has it own unique list of all other libraries sorted according to most-relevant-to-send-requests-to as an integrated part of DanBib library.dk - ELAG 2002

  4. library.dk - ELAG 2002

  5. Searching • Simple search • Advancedsearch • Subject, Author, Title, ISBN, free text and year • Menu with type and language • SCAN • Author, Title, Subject • CCL-screen library.dk - ELAG 2002

  6. Requesting • The borrower selects the pick-up library • The borrower doesn't need to know which library the book belongs to • The Inter Library Loan process is for the libraries - not for the borrower • The system suggest a source, but the pick-up library select library to deliver • The libraries have to procure the book in the cheapest manner library.dk - ELAG 2002

  7. Requests from Nov 2000 to March 2002 library.dk - ELAG 2002

  8. ILL-requests to public libraries • From public libraries: • 2000: 703.243 • 2001: 843.323  + 19,9 % • From research libraries: • 2000: 145.538 • 2001: 219.627  + 50,9 % • Total loans  - 1,1 % library.dk - ELAG 2002

  9. Some consequences of bibliotek.dk • More requests for material located in research libraries • Requests for new books not yet purchased by the library • New users - some nerds have discovered the libraries • More effective use of the libraries library.dk - ELAG 2002

  10. Developments 2001 (highlights) • Adding links to Internet services developed by the libraries • Better match of different records of same edition of same title - 1.1 million duplicates deleted • Links to request screen in local library library.dk - ELAG 2002

  11. Integration with other systems • The requests to users library • Perform ILL-request • Move the user to request in local library • Repeat a search in library.dk Future development • Check borrower-id before request • Request of copy of article to supplier • Request of book to supplier library.dk - ELAG 2002

  12. The requests to users library The user library get access to their users requests: • receiving e-mail • look it up in a database Normally requests for their own holding are received by e-mail and proposals for ILL- request are looked it up in the database library.dk - ELAG 2002

  13. Perform ILL-request Integrated in the DanBib request mail-box. ILL-requests to other libraries are sent by: • Email - unstructured - just text • ISO-ILL carried by Z39.50 A copy of the request to requesting library: • Email - unstructured - just text • Email - structured for update in local ILL-system library.dk - ELAG 2002

  14. Move the user to request in local library • Some libraries don't accept requests for their own books etc. • Then the user can’t request the title in library.dk • But can click on a link and is moved to the request screen in his local library system library.dk - ELAG 2002

  15. Repeat a search in library.dk • Many libraries offer their users a possibility in the OPAC: • Repeat the search in library.dk if the search in the local system gives zero hits • E.g.: Search for title: Coastal morphology • http://www.bibliotek.dk/linkme.zap?ccl=ti%3DCoastal+morphology library.dk - ELAG 2002

  16. Check borrower-id before request • The weakness of the current way to handle the user-initiated ILL-request is the manual check of borrower identity • Solution: automatic check of borrower before he got access to request in library.dk • Plan: to use NCIP to make the check library.dk - ELAG 2002

  17. Request of copy of article to supplier • For articles registered in the national bibliography is planned to open a “request a copy send to your letter box” service • The user pay with credit card • The request is send to a library, who can deliver copy for the specific journal • This library send the copy by mail same day - and is credited every month library.dk - ELAG 2002

  18. Request of book to supplier • When a user want a title, he will be presented for the possibility to buy it • Select the bottom and he is presented for an overview of suppliers • Select a supplier and he is moved to the suppliers web-page ready to buy the specific title library.dk - ELAG 2002

  19. Just try it: Danish interface: • http://bibliotek.dk English interface: • http://library.dk library.dk - ELAG 2002
