  1. INHERENT – TEIN2 Indonesia Higher education Network

  2. Our Presentation • TEIN2 network • INHERENT (Indonesian Higher Education Network)

  3. TEIN2 • Connecting R & D Network on EU and Asia • Indonesia is initiatives by ITB • Bandwidth 45 Mbps trough fiber optics • Start on December 2005 - 2007

  4. TEIN2 Network

  6. TEIN2 Link Setup @ ITB • IP-VPN Link is provided by Indosat and Singtel • ITB still use PC-based Router using Quagga Routing Daemon on FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE • ITB received +/- 9800 BGP prefixes from TEIN2-SOUTH at 12 April 2006

  7. Physical Configuration • ID-SG IP-VPN Configuration

  8. Photos • Above : • PC-based FreeBSD Router and Modem • Left : STM-1 to Ethernet Mux

  9. Bandwidth Consumption • Our Daily and Weekly Cacti Graph to TEIN2 • Monthly and Yearly Graph

  10. Indonesian Higher Education Network (INHERENT) • Proposed by Directorate General of Higher Education • Connecting Indonesia Higher Education Institution by STM-1 National Backbone (for Java Area) and 8 Mbps other area • Start on late July or August 2006 and connecting 31 University on every province • The network will connect more than 200 State University and 500 private university

  11. Indonesia-wide Network

  12. JAVA Backbone (STM-1 fiber)

  13. Sumatera Backbone

  14. Kalimantan Backbone

  15. Sulawesi Backbone

  16. Bali Backbone

  17. INHERENT Backbone

  18. Status on 15th July 2006 • Java backbone was connected 155 Mbps • Sumatra Area , Kalimantan Area , and other Area will be connected on 29th July 2006

  19. INHERENT Issues • IP Addressing • IP Routing • Policy Routing

  20. IP Address Issues • 2 class B = 512 class C • 128 class C should be allocated • 384 class C should be allocated 3 Large, medium, and small classes • Advanced Network (Jawa) = 24 class C • Medium Network = 12 class C • Basic Network = 8 class C

  21. IP Allocation scheme for POP • Advanced Network (Jawa) : 7 node = 168 class C • bandung , semarang, malang , surabaya , jakarta , yogya, medan • Medium Network : 6 = 72 class C • medan, padang, denpasar, makassar, manado, palembang • Basic network : 19 = 152 class C • banda aceh , pekanbaru, serang, jambi, bengkulu, bandar lampung, kupang, mataram, tarnate, jayapura, manokwari, ambon, kendari, samarinda, pontianak, palangkaraya, banjarmasin, palu, gorontalo • We need : 392 kelas C, cadangan 120 kelas C (23%)

  22. IP Addressing Issues (con’td) • Ideal : request /15 to APNIC • We use ITB IP’s number for transition before INHERENT have : IP 167.205.128/18 • Solution : IP Private

  23. Distribution IP for INHERENT POP • For each 7 Pop  /23 • For each medium and basic  /24 utk 25

  24. Layer 3 Network Design • Naming Convention • IP Addressing • Routing Protocol

  25. Naming Convention • IBRX..Xyy & IBSX..Xyy • IBR/S: INHERENT Backbone Router/Switch • X..X: University/location nickname where device located • E.g.: IBRDIKTI01 & IBSDIKTI01 • IDRX..Xyy, IDSX..Xyy, IARX..Xyy & IASX..Xyy • D: Distribution • A: Access • FQDN for INHERENT

  26. IP Addressing • Structured IP addressing design to enable IP address summarization • Public IP: temporarily using ITB: 167.205.128/18 • /23 for Advanced POPs • /24 for Medium & Basic POPs • Address allocation • Links • Loopbacks • Hosts

  27. IP Addressing Example

  28. Routing Protocol • De-centralized Management • All 32 POPs will be independent • Each University has an equal authority • Each of 32 routers uses its own AS number • Routing: • EBGP • OSPF for WAN links & Loopback only

  29. AS Number • Use private AS number for All POPs • Those who has public AS number may use their AS number • Private AS number: 64512 – 65535 • INHERENT Backbone: 65001-650032

  30. BGP Policies • Each University must only advertise its own public IPs into INHERENT • Each University must only except other universities public IPs from INHERENT • Each University must set BGP Policy to choose INHERENT for traffic between universities • Weight • Local Preference

  31. BGP Policies, Cont. • Each University must not advertise other universities public IPs to the internet • Universities use his own AS number must aware to remove the private AS number when advertise routing to Internet • Inside INHERENT let normal BGP process choose the path

  32. Integration Scenario

  33. Integration Scenario, Cont.

  34. Integration Scenario, Cont.

  35. Configuration on Java Network

  36. TEIN2 and INHERENT • Indonesian Higher Education will be connected to TEIN2 via ITB • Open for the Research and education Collaboration
