  1. RECYCLING OF PLASTICS HOW DO WE PROGRESS? Per Haakonsen, PolymerTrade AS The Waste Management Days 05.06.2013

  2. CHANGES ARE COMING • Today minimum half ofthecollectedplasticwaste is exported to Asia • The EU wants to becomeindependentof Asia-exportofwastebefore 2020! => less export in containers to Asia, cheapertransportationofplasticswithin Europe • At the same time the EU wants more plastics to be material-recoveredinsteadof energy-recovered Great ambitions!

  3. THERMOSETSAND THERMOPLASTICS Thermosetsdo not melt. Theyare, at present, a material for energyrecovering/cementproduction TYPICAL: «GLASSFIBRE BOAT» (glass-fibre reinforced polyester = GRP) The material can be recovered Thermoplastics melt. The material Can be recovered, evenif it is glass- fibre reinforced The rest ofthepresentation is abouttherecoveryofthermoplastics.

  4. A PRACTICAL DIVISION • PackagingSchemesupported by GRØNT PUNKT NORGE (GPN- remuneratedPackaging Waste Management Solutions) • Plastic Film, EPS, Big-bags, Agricultural plastic, Plastic from Recycling Centres • It is functioningwell, butthevolumescan and ought to be increased, particularlyofplastic film, hard plastics(cans, bins, etc) and EPS • OtherThermoplastics • PackagingoutsideGPN’sPackagingScheme • Production Waste • DiscardedPlastic Waste • Waste from MechanicalSorting/Metal Recycling • A lot disappearsintocombustion, landfill or «gets lost» Far from the moment ofbeingpleased!

  5. GPN’sPlasticPackagingWaste Management Industrial and Commercial Plastic Film -Delivered to recycling sorted or separatedinto ColourMix or Clear (must be collected in Transparentplastic bags/sacks) • Before baling almost all plasticrecyclers sort theplasticwaste by type and partly by colourwiththehelpofsortingmachines. • Otherwise, they just removepolutants and bale the film as Mix-ColourPlastics.

  6. Industrialand Commercial Plastic Foil/Film Here it is just to start sorting and/or baling…………….

  7. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management • Industrial and Commercial Foil/Film NB! The discarded foil, wherethepackagingfee has beenpaid, must be regarded as such. Discarded PE-bags packed in cartonboxes PP-foil on roll, discarded

  8. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management • Industrial/Commercial Hard Plastics • Variousbottles, cans, barrels • Variouscommercialtrays/boards • As a rule, delivered to recyclingtogetherwithotherwaste, verymuchofwhichends up as residual waste. • NB! Bottles, caps, boxes and trays from thebreweryindustry fall under therecycabledepositschemes. No GPN-support for this.

  9. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management • Industrial/Commercial EPS (Polystyrene) • Recoveredmainly from Fish Processing • Comesalso from Commerce (packagingoftechnicalproducts) – greatpotential! • EPS from building materials has GPN’s financial support! • Requiresspecialequipment to compactthe material.

  10. Industrial/Commercial EPS (Polysyrene) Almost all ESP from fishboxes is recovered …butthereremains a lot in thecollectedtechnicalconsumerproductspackaging

  11. GPN’sPlasticPackagingWaste Management • Agricultural Film LLDPE from strawensilage.Packedboth in round and square bales (regularpractice). LDPE from mulching film • Other: • LDPE from greenhouses ++ (clear) • PP non-woven and PP-net

  12. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management • Agricultural Hard Plastics • PS Plant Trays (horticulturist’s and florist’s) Can be stackedonpallets - PP, PS, PET Punnets (horticulturist’s ++) - PP and HDPE PlasticCrates (horticulturist’s and commodity trade) - PVC-Pipes from thecoreofplastic stretch films on roll (agriculture) PP-POTS BALED

  13. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management • PP BIG-BAGS (PP-SACK) • The largestvolumescome from fish-farming (will be reducedbecauseofthetransition to bulk) • Other major sourcesareagriculture and variousindustries Usuallydeliveredwith PE-innerbagtogetherwiththewoven PP- bag/sack

  14. PLASTICS FROM RECYCLING CENTRES: GREAT POTENTIAL • It is a mixureofplasticpackaging and otherplasticsdeliveredonwastecollection Clear Foil/Film Coloured Foil/Film PET Various PP

  15. SORTING REPORT

  16. GPN’sPlasticPackaging Waste Management => God system, THE VOLUMES CAN BE INCREASED The Rest ofThermoplastics => ENTRUSTED TO THE COMMERCIAL MARKET Floats from off-shore : Werehopeless, butnow… Acrylic from advertising production =>

  17. Production Waste from Plastic Products Moulding • It is bothtechnically and commerciallyrecoverable. • Technical Data Sheet is needed (Health-Environment-and-Safety Data Sheet is not sufficient => HMS-DB) • It is important toseparate: nowrongplasticshould be mixed in The biggestchallenge is thatoften producers prefer to throwthewaste in a 10 – 35 m3 wastedisposal under theopen sky. It makes thetransportation more expensive, requiresreloading, the material must dry, etc.=> Increasedcosts => reduced purchasingprice

  18. Plastics from Fishery and Fish Farming is bothtechnically and commerciallyrecoverable • NYLON-NETS, PP- ROPES, PE-THRAWLERS AND PE- PIPES (perhaps15-20.000 tonsper year) PP-rope loaded in a container Loadingof nylon nets

  19. NYLON NETS, PP-ROPES AND PE-PIPES FROM FISHERY AND FISH FARMING COPPER IMPREGNATION OF FISH-FARMING NETS REQUIRES SPECIAL CAUTIOUSNESS This is under 5 tons PE- fishfeeding pipes in a 90 m3 Chip Trailer

  20. ManuallySeparatedPlastics from Discarded Products is bothtechnically and commerciallyrecoverable. • PP-bumpers from carrepair shops and breakers’ yards • Otherplasticfractions from metal recyclers and otherrecyclers PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate) og PC (Polycarbonate) from greenhouse demolition(4000 m2 = one 40 feet container)

  21. PRODUCTION WASTE FROM MECHANICAL SORTING (metal recovery is the driving force) • Is bothtechnically and commerciallyrecoverable. HIPS (highImpactPolyStyrene) from lining in refrigerators and freezers (WHITE GOODS) 5000 tonn/år? ABS andPS from variouselectronicproducts(BROWN GOODS: TV-sets, computers, etc.) 5000 tons/year? Bromatedflameretardentsare a problem!

  22. PRODUCTION WASTE FROM VARIOUS MECHANICAL SORTING • Nowweareapproachingthechallenges! • Insulation mantle from plastic-insulatedcable(plastic and metal aresortedafter grinding, orinsulation mantle is strippedoff) • 10.000t/year? • NB! LEAD! • Variousmagneticsortingof metal from plasticsfragmentation (eg.vehiclescrap) Products madeofcableinsulation mantle

  23. VARIOUS OFF SHORE DISCARDED PRODUCTS Steel – ReinforcedProtectors First truckloadofoff shorebuoysready for material recovery METAL RECYCLERS REPORT ON THE INCREASING QUANTITY OF THERMOPLASTICS COMBINEDWITH METAL SCRAP – ESPECIALLY FROM THE OFF SHOR SECTOR

  24. OTHER SOLUTIONS? • FROM PLASTICS TO OIL: • Thermoplasticwastecontaining minimum 75% PE/PP, max 20% PS, max 5% otherthermoplastics

  25. ”PYROLYSIS” • Sorting, shredding and, eventually, drying • Force-feedingoftheheatedreactor • Molecularchainscrack (depolymerization) • Moist, salts and slag areventilated/drained • Fueloil or more refinedproductsareextractedafteradditionalrefining stages • Various pilot plants are operating in Europe • Project for 5-10.000 t/year plant in Norway

  26. Whatcanplasticwaste be used for? OLD BEER CRATES ARE TURNED INTO NEW CRATES, TRASH CANS, etc. (Most ofbottlecrates and trashcansaremade from recycledplastics, and theycan be recycledagain and again… POLYSTERYNE CRATES/BOXES AND OTHER EPS CAN GET A NEW LIFE AS EPS PICTURE FRAMES!

  27. Whatcanplasticwaste be used for? Plastic foil/film is used in theproductionofgarbage bags, shopping bags, cable cover band, plasticsheets/panels, and solid mouldedproducts HubCapsaremoulded from discardedplasticrefrigirators(High ImpactPolystyrene– HIPS)

  28. Whatcanplasticwaste be used for? PVC-profiles for pig pens - made from windowprofiles productionwaste Varioustubing/pipes aremadeofhighquality plastic waste Wireline well, moulded from glassfibre reinforced PC, is a wasteproduct in car manufacturingindustry

  29. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION! I HOPE YOU ARE MORE INFORMED NOW. I HOPE YOU CAN SEE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MATERIAL RECOVERY OF PLASTICS!
