Why Be Fit? • Short term benefits • Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety • Weight control • Promotes psychological well-being • Long term benefits • Lower risk of dying prematurely • Lower risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure • Builds strong bones, muscles, and joints to prevent injuries

  4. The FITT Principle • American College of Sports Medicine fitness guidelines • Stands for: • Frequency • Intensity • Time • Type Source: ACSM, 2007; Yang, 2006-7

  5. Three main types of exercise • Aerobic exercise, aka “cardio” • Jogging • Swimming • Strength Training, aka resistance training • Weightlifting • Body building • Flexibility Training

  6. Exercise in a Crunch • What are some exercises you do when time is tight? • What are some exercises that are easy to do in your dorm room? • Ideas?! • REMEMBER: It is better to exercise for at least a short amount of time than to • not exercise at all!

  7. Fitness at UNC • There are several great ways to get moving at UNC • Campus Rec offers gym access, group fitness classes, and intramural sports • Student organizations and sport clubs • In the community – trails, gyms, yoga studios, etc.

  8. Fitness tips • Know when to take a break • Hydrate! • Visit Campus Health Services if you think you have injured yourself or have recurring symptoms while exercising • Exercise buddies
