  1. JOURNEY TO COSTA RICA Adventures in culture, ecology and language June 26 – July 6, 2004

  2. Places we journeyed to… • Arenal volcano and Tabacón hot springs • Monteverde cloud forest and nature hikes • La Cruz, Guanacaste and Hotel Ecoplaya • The capital city of San José • Jacó and Manuel Antonio beaches

  3. On the road to Arenal Coffee plantations off the side of the mountain roads Small villages always have a church, a park, a school and a soccer field

  4. Just some of the cool critters to be seen in and around Tabacón Iguana (left); Grasshopper (right) Gigantic moth (left); Monarch butterfly (right)

  5. Tabacón Hot Springs and Arenal Volcano • Although it was too cloudy to see the mini-eruptions from the Arenal Volcano, the road trip through the Costa Rican mountains was fabulous. (b-u-m-p-y!) • We finally made it to our destination of Tabacón hot springs, which was more luxury than any of us were used to. The water in the tropical riverbeds and waterfalls are heated by the geothermal activity of the volcano.

  6. More critters at the Butterfly farm in Monteverde From top left: centipede/millipede, postman Butterfly, hercules beetle; Next row left; scarab Beetles, la cucaracha, owl butterfly

  7. Could you name or classify these organisms?

  8. Monteverde • Set in the high hills of central Costa Rica, there are lots of things to do; night hikes, butterfly farm tours, ice cream factory tours, zip lines through the canopy…but the best thing is to just take in all the magnificent creatures and plants and the nice people in the area.

  9. Look to the sky… Off in the distance, there was an amazing lightning storm Another beautiful hotel in Monteverde

  10. Up in the clouds (cloudforest that is…)

  11. Take an Adventure… Zip lines, tarzan swings, viewing the canopy from 150 feet in the air! You never thought you could do it but boy are you glad you did!

  12. Hotel Ecoplaya, La Cruz, Guanacaste • In the very northwestern corner of Costa Rica, you can experience the dry forest and the Pacific winds near the Nicaraguan border. • Although this is a secluded and far off resort, there was easy to become immersed in this paradise.

  13. All kinds of extra adventures… From salsa lessons, to beach volleyball, chillin’ at the pool or dancin’ to your own beat

  14. Beachcombing and hiking at Ecoplaya From the top left: Cacti growing in the dry forest, coconuts, mangrove seed and bush (which can live near salt water), tourist trees (have green photosynthetic trunk and peel their bark) Lower left: dead cow fish, marine toad, orange-kneed crab and a crab climbing a tree.

  15. A kite? But where’s the rope?

  16. Visit to El Jobo elementary school Rural schools in Costa Rica get about $90 per child per year. Qualified teachers and principals usually live an hour and a half from where they teach. Items that this school could really use are books, pencils, paper, folders…the basics! A favorite game for the children are wooden tops.

  17. San José’s cultural attractions View of San Jose from National Museum (below) The National Theater has a wealth of Costa Rican history and art (above) The royal room at the National Theater (above) and the painted ceiling (below) Mysterious, perfectly circular stone sculptures made by indigenous people of Costa Rica can be seen at the National Museum (right)

  18. Sidetrips along the road At an animal reservation, ocelots, pumas, macaws, parakeets and white-faced monkeys are taken in. Coffee used to be Costa Rica’s #1 industry, but it is now tourism. Costa Rica’s altitude and climate are perfect for growing the perfect beans. The process of growing and roasting coffee is amazing.

  19. The Flora of the Pacific Coast In the upper left corner is a shot of a field of some aging palm trees. After the older trees die, they leave the trunks to nourish the smaller, newer plants at the base of the trunks. To the right is a picture of a banana tree with fruit. Below are some unique flora; epiphytes (plants don’t need to be rooted in soil) and tarzan vines.

  20. Finally…the beaches- Jaco and Manuel Antonio! Imag i ne …a 12 foot wave bearing down on you. You look at it, take a deep breath, get tumbled around into the surf, scrape your knee in the sand, bathing suit gets all jumbled, maybe even parts ripped off, only to look up and see that another one is coming for you…AGAIN! You can’t handle “the dos”. You have just been ravaged by Manuel Antonio!

  21. The best of the animal sightings Literally, feet away, some of the most outrageously unique beings on the planet. Upper left -a SLOTH! Upper right- an AGOUTI! Lower left-some NOCTURNAL birdLower right-a QUATIMUNDI

  22. A final word about the Ticos • The Costa Rican people are some of the nicest, friendliest and polite people in the world. Despite the constant burden of tourists, they maintain a quiet sense of peace…otherwise known as PURA VIDA!

  23. Credits • NETC tour company • Our tour guide…José and bus drivers…William and Minor • Chaperones…Melissa Monda-Hall, Jenny and Greg Buron • Our 16 student adventurers • The people of Costa Rica Powerpoint made by: JB
