Matthew 7:24-27 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

  3. Demolition: Forgiveness

  4. Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

  5. Big Idea: We need to forgive, every time

  6. DEFINITION “The decision to release a person from the obligation that resulted when they injured you.” or “To no longer count that sin against them.”

  7. 2 Corinthians 5:19 “Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.”

  12. Big Idea: We need to forgive, every time

  13. #3 – Not automatic trust Luke 16:10-11 “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?”

  14. #4 – Not no consequences 2 Samuel 12:14-31 “David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the Lord.’ And Nathan said to David, ‘The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.’”

  17. #7 – Not enabling Galatians 6:1 “Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”

  18. The Forgiveness Transaction Make a list of hurts you have in your heart. (This is a one-time responsibility to get all of the past hurts healed.) Or acknowledge that you have just been hurt.

  19. The Forgiveness Transaction In marriage, go to your partner and tell them you have been hurt by them and you want to be healed. Ask them if they are willing to help you heal.

  20. The Forgiveness Transaction Ask them to listen and then share with them what hurt you, and how it made you feel. You have got to get down to the feelings if you want the transaction to work. (Remember the example of Jesus. At the height of His suffering, in the midst of His pain, He offered forgiveness.)

  21. The Forgiveness Transaction As the listener, reflect back your understanding of their pain. What it is like, how they got it, and why it hurts them.

  22. The Forgiveness Transaction As the offending partner, take responsibility for causing their pain. Confess your wrongdoing, and ask them for forgiveness for your failure. Say, “Will you forgive me for ___________.” (Fill in with your description of the failure.)

  23. The Forgiveness Transaction As the initiator, thank them for understanding your pain, and then say, “I forgive you for __________ (list the offense) and how it made me feel.”

  24. The Forgiveness Transaction Pray together and ask the Lord to heal this wound, protecting this new scab and bringing it soon to a scar.

  25. The Forgiveness Transaction “Lord Jesus, I choose to forgive (name of the person) for (what he or she did or failed to do) because it made me feel (painful feeling experienced). I ask you to heal me. Amen”
